Palestinian leadership condemn bombings in english and arabic as demanded by the US and Israel... any opinions out there?
soory for an add-on: A number of American officials have already noted that the American request was for a condemnation in Arabic on TV and radio to all Arabs in the area but what they got instead was a statement in writing.

The inveterate scammer. Still got his old spunk! Of course he knows through channels that his credibility having sunk someplace far south of zero, meeting with Powell will win him nothing, so he offers up nothing in return.
I think he should stick around a little longer and meet with everybody he can except Arafat, just to drive the point home. The taxicab drivers' association. The head of the office of veterinary medicine. The union shop steward for Magen David Sheet Metal and Pipe Fitting.

maybe im wrong - but it seems like a it would be a little tough to make a statement on TV and radio when arafat is confined to his bombed out HQ hemmed in by tanks with sporadic power in addition to the palestinian broadcast center being blown to bits about two weeks ago.
not meaning to defend the suicide bombings...in any way....

If Arafat wanted to make a public, televised statement I'm sure he could have arranged it. The Israelis and American's would surely provide the technology required since they have been requesting this statement for months.

One thing that's become very clear is that if Arafat wants the word to get out, the word gets out, regardless of his circumstances. I was watching C-Span (the Prime Minister's Questions) and a conservative member made the point that Arafat didn't want to negotiate with Netanyaho, and was waiting to deal with Barak, which ultimately failed as well.
He didn't want to negotiate with Bibi, or Barak, and especially Sharon. He thinks terrorizing the Israeli populace is his strongest chance to promote his agenda.
And BTW, I believe that Arafat made the statement just to meet with Powell, and it looks like he can still fool 'em.

I think being forced into making a meaningless statement would be pretty humiliating. You can't blame the guy for being reluctant to bow to our bullshit.

Which smacked of "gotcha last!!" but I'm cynical.

in this climate I would have figured the blood of 500 Palestinian civilians was roughly equivalent to that of 6 Israelis, but I'm obviously far too conservative.
if Sharon were burying 5000 corpses in the mass graves he's now digging in Jenin, and Arafat were in shackles, people here would probably still be ranting against their bogeyman.

A meeting with arafat, or Not, will not change any thing. To my mind, it doesnt make a difference. It would make a difference only if the states had any credibility in Palestinian minds. Similar to the no credibility status of the Palestinians in Israeli minds.
The facts are, that Israel continues to occupy Palestinian land, people, lives, even dead bodies. The Palestinian people have the God given right to fight the occupying army and inflict as much damage to it as possible. I support any and all attacks on the IDF personnel and facilities, similarly as I supported the US attack on the Taleban and Al Qaeda. I do, on the other hand, condemn the killing of civilians by both sides.
There are two wars being fought in the Middle East. One by the Palestinian people against the Zionist occupation of its lands and lives, and the other fought by an angry, fanatic bunch against the existence of Israel itself.
The best way would be for Israel to get rid of its Zionist side and win hearts in the Palestine. The longer this war goes on, the more chances are that it is going to mix with the war against Israel itself. And the longer this violence will last, even if Israel goes back to 1967 boundaries, people will still think its the violence that made it happen. which is a wrong lesson for our future generations.

Meantime, the last suicide woman says on video that had Arafat said not to kill, she would not have"....i said in a thread a few days before this Drudge stuff(which is an obvious *plant*) that the only one(s) who could really stop *this* is the bombers them-selfs. ya know. picture some 17 yr old kid, snipping the primer and locking the detenator. walk up to a Israeli check point and say "I was going to walk into that cafe and kill as many as i can, but i dont want too." then another, then another, a whole series of random 'i will not die'. thats about the only way.

Question for you, adnanbwp: Which of these would have the greater consequense: States (the US) having credibity with Palestinians, or the Palestinians (rather, the right of the Palestinians to self-govern) having credibilty with the US? In other words, who has more to lose? You decide.

To tell the truth, I think it's more important that the Palestinians trust the US. If they negotiate some sort of peace deal, but the Palestinians don't trust the middle-men, there will be no peace.
If the US doesn't trust the Palestinians, but negotiates a peace deal in good faith, there is more chance of peace. Remember, it's how the Palestinians feel about the process that will end the suicide attacks, not how the Americans feel.
