“Wonder what's cooking at the house tonight; stew and beans”

Waiting for a Train (lyrics) was the ninth single by Flash and the Pan, reaching #7 in the UK singles chart in 1983. The group formed in 1976 by Harry Vanda (guitar, keyboards) and George Young (guitar, keyboards, vocals), and were heavily involved in many other Australian music groups and projects (most notably AC/DC, for family reasons).

Flash & the Pan are only known (barely) over here for the proto-New-Wave single "Hey St. Peter", so I'm glad to hear more of their sound. Rarely has the "80s" tag been more accurate...

Harry and George started out as members of the Easy Beats back in the 60's. They went on to quite a career as songwriters and producers.

The first two Flash and the Pan albums (only two ever appeared here in the US back in the day) were brilliant. Amazing production, weirdly literate lyrics, a unique singing style, and they were just different. 80’s? More like 70’s.

Welcome to the Universe and Captain Beware are my favorites. I think I must have been introduced to them by KZAM 1540 (Rock of the 80's) in Bellevue, WA in the early 80's.

A couple years ago I met some friends for dinner at a restaurant in Los Angeles. When I left I turned on my car and Hey St. Peter was playing on the stereo. After a minute I became puzzled because I realized I hadn't connected my phone (music player) to the sound system and I couldn't comprehend why it was playing.

When the song ended a DJ came on and ID'd the song! It was on the radio!

I was shocked that a) anyone had ever heard of Flash and the Pan and b) KCRW in Los Angeles was playing a song of theirs in 2017.

I felt completely validated.

They seemed to come from the same alternate universe Godley & Creme came from; erudite kitsch.
