Managing the Atom

For those of you suddenly obsessed with Iran and the atom. I wonder how that happened...
I am a bit confused: The link is to a blog of sorts put together by the Belfer Center, part of Harvard's Kennedy School, with some decent coverage of the Iran nuclear issue. Whether it is the best of the web is debateable, given the amount of stuff MeFi has had on the topic, but it is interesting, and has pieces from a variety of sources.
But then the FPP seems to imply that the linked-to blog is part of some wider disinformation campaign to prepare for war. I just don't see anything in the link that would support your contention - it seems like a fairly balanced coverage of an international crisis that is worrying to a wide range of groups. And, make no mistake, the Iran nuclear diplomatic crisis is real, not manufactured, just as North Korea's nuclear weapons programs is a real crisis. Whether we should act or not is another issue, but certainly the Belfer blog is not calling for war. So, what is up with the tone of this post?

Actually I am less worried about Iran's actions than our fearless leader's.

I think America is WAY more scary than Iran. I mean, one country talks a lot of smack, the other actually walks around smacking other countries.

The Middle East for starters I suppose. Who is actually afraid of Iran? Israel perhaps, but somehow I doubt that.

Regardless of your politics, I think everyone should be opposed to nuclear proliferation, and especially with regard to states which are young, unstable, aggressive, or any combination of the above.
But I think it's also important to remember that Iran's wacky president does not control the country. If he did, it would be a democracy (of sorts), but even a cursory analysis of that country shows that the president cannot do much with regard to Iran's nuclear or foreign policies.
It's also important to be realistic about the capabilities of Iran getting a bomb, the capabilities of actually testing one, then the capability of delivering it, and lastly the liklihood of that ever happening. Simply whipping up fear in the form of mad-mullahs-with-bombs is not constructive.
