I want to cryogenically freeze myself for 20 years so that when I wake up I can immediately marry that girl on the white guitar.

I don't know; there's something wrong about using upstrokes to play a Metallica riff, even if it is from the black album. Even children should know that instinctively.

Are they sponsored by Mini Cooper?

There's no bass out of respect for Cliff Burton. Even though Cliff Burton would have killed himself rather than make the Black Album.

I don't know why I expected a more Hetfield-esque vocal style, but I cracked up at, "Say yo pwayers wittle one/Don't foget my son/to incwude evwyone."

But, yes, that was great. I had a friend who worked for one of the Schools of Rock, and I went to one of their graduation shows, where probably 3/4 of the songs were songs I knew from Rock Band, which is hard to separate from merely being many of the most popular songs ever, but I still took it to confirm my theory that Rock Band is going to give rise to a generation of highly technical musicians, and especially drummers. There are a lot of highly competent preadolescent drummers out there nowadays.

The drummer is already better than Lars.

And I love that the girl's solo face isn't rapt concentration, but rather just-doesn't-give-a-fuck.

To be fair, that's a low bar.

Spicynuts:

Actually, the bassist is offscreen for most of it; you can see him at the very end to the right of the girl.

That solo face reminds me of Wata from Boris. That "I know I'm awesome, what are you looking at?" vibe.

MORE 8 YEAR OLD FEMALE METAL GUITARISTS, PLEASE!

I like the Melvins (a lot), yet I never thought to check out Boris. Thanks Fraxas. I am now a Boris fan (as if that wasn't inevitable).

OK. So after that thread derailment, I wish I could play the guitar like any of those kids. Just great. And Googly, I'm doing the same for my soon to be born baby....

'Even though Cliff Burton would have killed himself rather than make the Black Album.'

That's a meaningless statement, not least in light of the fact that prior to the production of the Black Album it must've surely seemed like all of the members of Metallica would rather have killed themselves than make a 'pop metal' album. But they did.

And say what you will, but that album changed my life and many others as well who would not have been introduced to metal any other way.

Never minding the fact, of course, that it is actually one of their best albums.

It's friday, hoss....lighten up. This post is about some awesome kids...not a pissing match about which Metallica album is best, even though Kill Em All is the best and I was listening to Metallica on cassette tape before your momma stopped wiping your ass for you.

Also, Wolfdog is correct. Metallica riffs (and all proper metal riffs) are played downpicked even when it often sounds like alternate picking. The classic example is the riff in the song 'Master of Puppets.' Hetfield is metal rhythm guitar incarnate.

There are some who say "Oh, but I can alternate-pick it and it sounds the same because I have good technique." It usually doesn't sound the same, though.

But mostly it's the principle. Downpicking is more metal, because it is more difficult. 'The easy way' should rarely apply in the creation and performance of metal music.

Also, alternate picking something that should be downpicked makes ou look stupid and lazy on stage, and girls will NOT show you their boobs.

Also, it would rock if Ellen Degeneres had them on her show and then surprised them by having Metallica there. Indeed, this should happen every time anyone under ten covers a song by a living artist.

(The kid drummer is pretty metal already, though---complete with drummerface and tasteful drummer moves.)

(And say what you will about Lars, his drummerface is one of the best. He looks like someone has his balls in a vice and he's real angry about it.)

The rhythm guitar is sounding kickass! Loving the girls solo as well - Kirk would be so proud! This is definitely way better than I've heard a bunch of 14-15 year olds play it. I'd love to hear them play For Whom the Bell Tolls!

Hey, it's Zoe! My 6.5-year old daughter and discovered that YT channel the other week and had a blast checking out vids of all the kids--great talent all around. Don't miss Zoe at the age of 6 playing the theme to Pirates of the Caribbean and, at 7, playing Sweet Child O Mine and Cooking in the Kitchen (The Crave). And here's a vid of the Mini Band's first club gig.
Huge kudos to the folks at Newbury Rock School - they are good people.

Eight-year-old Zoe Thomson playing that guitar solo is just about the awesomest thing I've ever seen in my entire goddamn life. I have never wished I'd had a daughter so much as I did at that moment. She's like the Platonic ideal of the coolest eight-year-old girl. (Normally, I'd think that her hairstyle and clothing shouldn't be so conventional...but it really works as a counterpoint in this context.)

Ten-year-old Charlie Emmons on drums isn't flashy, but entirely solid, better than many competent adult drummers. I say this as a lifelong drummer, myself.

Thanks for this.

The Black Album isn't REAL Metallica.

Just joking , that was good! (Now let's hear Creeping Death.)

Slayer says you are wrong; drop it and go faster. Actually, even Metallica lets it go from the likes of Whiplash and Damage, Inc. Rumors of Hetfield's unceasing downpicking are a bit exaggerated.

For more "vids to show my daughters" you should add this little girl kicking ass at parkour. Actually there's lots of really good traceuse footage.

spicynuts: "There's no bass out of respect for Cliff Burton. Even though Cliff Burton would have killed himself rather than make the Black Album."

There was a bass. The camera panned far right and his was there. I bet his parents are pissed!

TheRedArmy: "Downpicking is more metal, because it is more difficult. 'The easy way' should rarely apply in the creation and performance of metal music."

I am fascinated by your theories and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

A yes, 4:24 there was bass. But he's been ignored and left out of the limelight, as would be appropriate for the Black album. If they were playing something from Justice, however, then they would've just thrown an octave pedal on the guitar and the bassist could've sat out.

Also, in fairness, Lars's drumming isn't bad. It's his talking which is awful.
