Do you have any idea what day tomorrow is? Oh sure you could celebrate by going to:
Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme.
But why not try someplace a little less mainstream?
New York's best donuts. (7th avenue donuts is best, IMO).
Not that I eat a lot of doughnuts or anything.

Far be it from me to get into the whole "SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL NOBLE MERCHANT!!" jibba-jabba but Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kremes absolutely suck and should be banned from partaking in donut day.

I'm so glad you mentioned this. Anyone have any comments about the Doughnut plant? The names and smell are mouth-watering, and there's one right down in Tokyo, but even here, I hesitate at a $4-5 donut. People: Is it worthwhile??

One of my odd jobs during college was working an overnight shift at a supermarket, drawing the specials and prices and whatnot on all the chalkboards that were strewn about the place. If I remember right, it was eight double-sided signs in Produce, three large wall mounts in Seafood, one large Deli board, and three wall mounts in the bakery. That's 23 boards all told to erase, wipe down, and draw over.
It was a great job for many reasons, including the fact that the night crew would blast stuff like Jane's Addiction over the store PA (you have not lived until you've done the Been Caught Stealing supermarket aisle dance down a supermarket aisle) and the fact that you got to stand on all the counters and snag rolls of stickers that said things like "TAKE ME HOME, I'M DELICIOUS."
But the greatest thing about it was the overnight bakery girl who made donuts. I'd save the bakery boards for last so I could end my shift hanging out with her, goofing off, making donuts and decorating a few for ourselves with the cake icing.
There really is nothing like a fresh donut just out of the fryer, cooled down long enough so you don't burn the hell out of yourself when you try to scarf it down. And the smell, which wafted through the store and out into the front parking lot, was downright inspiring. What it inspired I'm not quite sure, but man was it a great smell.
So yes, donuts are wonderful creations and I will gladly celebrate this day in a most appropriate fashion.

Tim Hortons has become such a dominant part of the Canadian landscape, I'm almost proud. Just had a medium black and double chocolate yesterday, in fact.

The only thing I miss about living/working in Lakewood WA was The House of Donuts. Tiny mungy building from the 50s with this amazing donut smell...when I worked in Lakewood, I always got a pink-glazed cake donut on my birthday. :)

Boston-area folks, let me recommend: a) Verna's Donuts in North Cambridge; b) Linda's Donuts in Belmont; and c) Betty Ann Food Shop in Eastie.
And for something a little more offbeat, the Persian donuts at Sofra are out of this world.

There are a few regional chains, each of which dominate a 25-million-person-plus market. Amen! I have the fortune to live right by a Fractured Prune. They make and fry all of the donuts fresh right in front of you. Only sad part is they don't have jelly or cream filled. I swear tomorrow is like Christmas.

If you enter my town and "doughnut" into google maps you get four full pages of only Dunkin' before you finally get to Whitney Donut. Which is where I'll be celebrating.
I'm serious. The Dunkin' domination here is creepy. There are 5 shops in our train station. Two of them are Dukin' Donuts.

When I was a kid, a Dunkin' Donuts donut was enormous, and it was a real special occasion when you were allowed to get one. It was a meal unto itself. As an adult, they seem puny... I think it's just because I remember them through the eyes of a little kid getting a once-in-a-blue-moon treat. They don't have the same "ultra-magic-awesome" flavor, either, even tho they taste familiar.
I grew up, the Dunkin Donuts stayed the same.

the donut stand at the pike place market is incredibly famous in the underground, too. the place has been staffed by punk kids for as far back as i can remember; my friends were dishing them out there back in the early ninetees and i'm friends with a lot of the kids there still. it's colloquial name is 'punk rock donuts: service with a sneer.'
in seattle we also have toppot and mighty o. toppot is totally independent and extremely delicious and mighty o proves that the vegan donut is not just a bland gut bomb. i used to work for toppot and my roomie, dk, worked for mighty o. multiple times a week we'd bring home cases of these evil treats and suddenly all our neighbors would be at our home.
donuts are social glue and a form of liberation. donuts will solve our problems with the middle east. when will obama learn?

Donut Plant yeast donuts are totally worth it. Especially the Creme Brulee. I don't like cake donuts as much so I can't speak about them.

Lower East Siders: Go to the dominican bakery on Clinton between Rivington and Delancey. Yes, the one with all the 10 year old wedding cakes with faded frosting falling off in chunks in the window. They have only one kind of doughnut.
It is yeasty, sweet, doughy, melt in your mouth and chewy at the same time. It actually has a doughnut taste, and is not just a flavorless wad of fat and sugar (ahem, KK), and is not a bigger than your head fake cake doughnut (I'm lookin at you Donut Plant).
They are 75 cents.
If you can't make it there for the fresh ones, buy them anyway and pop them in the micro for 10-15 seconds. It is a heaven that I have restrain myself from indulging in daily.
They are the best doughnuts in NYC.

While I love the maple-glazed bacon donut from the place down the street from me, my favorite donuts ever come from an apple stand/orchard just east of Placerville. In the fall, when the sun is still hot but the air is crisp, you go up to the window to order some cider donuts and then wait patiently until you are handed a hot, greasy paper bag of heaven, still hot from the fryer, with a perfect coating of cinnamon and sugar. Oh god.

I believe they go for 250-450 yen per doughnut, so they're not as expensive as all that, but I hesitate as to whether they are worthwhile. If you're nearby one of their bakery stores and you go soon after they come out of the oven (especially in the morning) then they're pretty good, especially the Triple Valrhona Chocolate and the Black Out.
BTW, I've heard good things about Harrits in Yoyogi Uehara.

Err spoken like someone who can't fry their own donuts. This "free donut day" is kind of a bummer since I don't have a nearby Dunkin (never been in one) or Krispy Kreme (used to love those hot) and my old teenage midnight haunt, the Spudnuts, just went out of business.
And just because I have everything I need to make a dozen kinds of donut here at home in the dutch oven doesn't mean they're "free." But they are amazing cooling on a rack, glaze still wet at the drips.
