Costume Knockoffs, Direct To You
October 23, 2010 11:29 AM   Subscribe

Cosplaygate brings you the finest in inexplicable costumes narrowly evading trademark issues, as well as Japanese-style fetish and cosplay wear (mostly SFW, actually). A banner promises "100% Off-World Shipping," while a live-chat bar reads "Need help? Jelly is online to help you."

In case you were wondering -- they work with many factories, so there is no middleman; and no, Cosplaygate is not shorthand for the saga of your congressman being discovered in a Sailor Moon outfit at the local con.

So they cater exclusively to those who've emigrated to the off-world colonies?

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Kinky Birds on fire off the shoulder of Skirt Blame Bear. I watched Pink Banny glitter in the dark near the Zentai Gate. All those mascots will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to cosplay.

6.Use special combs which could only be used in wig or the static-prevented combs instead of plastic ones or free base.

Ok, if I can't find the special plastic combs then I'll start taking cocaine intravenously. So noted.

"Skirt blame Bear" sounds like something from an awesome video game's walkthrough.

"Skirt blame bear! Evade the ursine finger-pointer! Elude the bruin's attempt to guilt you!"

Do they sell a full-sized Pedobear costume?

Oh and if anyone happens to find a 90s Superboy costume in there that isn't shiny, give me a heads up.

I swear, it's not like I've been looking for it everywhere for weeks and could only find shiny ones.

Really? To me "Skirt Blame Bear" sounds like a mascot from the worst slut-shaming PSA program ever. Like "Skirt Blame Bear says 'Hem below the knees, or you're a rotten tease.'" I am unhappy even imagining it.

There's no way I'm paying an extra $4 for a crotch zipper on a zentai suit. And another $4 for an open mouth?! What a ripoff.

Zentai, man . . . zentai should not be. Not that I'd ever attempt to base policy on this, but the zentai suit gets me right in the uncanny valley. That said, if they had had those zentai mermaid suits when I was little, I would have begged for one on bended knee, so that I could cut off the headpiece, put the mermaid suit part on, and basically live in it for the entirety of grade school like a small, insufferable otherkin.

Naw, these aren't attempts to evade trademark, just plain old errors (and probably ignorance as to the actual names) which is why they get Micky and Minnie right.

Clearly, the company is run by G. Gonah Gameson, a cranky, cigarello-chomping magazine publisher with an enormous papier-mâché head and a weirdly droopy jacket.

Coming soon to mwrica, full unemployment benifits and lifelong social networks, but if you take part in them you have to wear zentai suits in public so we can indentify and shun you.

It is the only obvious future.

Chocolate Pickle et al, that's what I thought of first too. There's one that's awfully close. Thing is, I bet you anything if we gave them a design for a pedobear costume, they'd make it. And can you imagine what 4chan would do then?

Zentai suit?

Oh. OK, umm...well, at least I now know where the superheroes get their outfits from.

This could be a boon for lower budget visual effects work. I actually think the green zentai suits could work well for greenscreen work, where you are trying to make an actor totally disappear. The suits that are designed and sold specifically as official chromakey suits are way more expensive.

Well that too I suppose, but you could just go as Green Man from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

MythMaker, totally agreed. One of these days chromakey gear is just going to even out to market rates. While producing an episode of my show, we found forums which tested off-the-shelf housepaint to see which colors would work for chromakey, and found quite a few that would. Chromakey green is just a color; there's no reason why anyone has to pay an arm and a leg for it.
