It became kind of cool to slag Jerry off for a while, and I'm not really going to get into all of that, though I don't buy it myself. I just want to point this out:

This man had one of the most successful TV shows in American history, has more money than he could possibly spend, and this:
6/3/11London, UK
6/4/11Oslo, NO
6/5/11Stockholm, SE
6/6/11Copenhagen, DE
6/9/11Grand Rapids, MI

is some killer touring.

Yeah, of those three the two that are longer than 30seconds made me laugh out loud. Which is lame, because I've seen them all before and there is no one in the room to laugh with me.

I read the NYT piece article last night, and I thought the premise of the site was interesting. I don't agree totally with his ideas about how being able to access metabytes* of information on youtube means finding good stuff is hard, but there's certainly plenty of space on the web for a curated collection.

*Metabytes defined as some insanely large amount of data

Surprised it didn't include this, hisfirst television appearance from 1977, which has been all over the web this week.

His early stand up is full of funny, but Seinfeld has to be the most overrated show in history.

It's a good idea - give people three bites and they'll value each one, and come back for more. If you give them everything at once they'll get tired of it after a couple of days, no matter what the content is.

While I was never the biggest fan of his show OR his stand up, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Jerry Seinfeld as a comedian. Terms of my employment contract prevent me from revealing more, but I can say that the man is ALWAYS working on new material, and that his touring schedule is so busy (for a man of his wealth) not because of greed but because of a devotion to his craft.
posted by KingEdRa at 12:22 PM on May 6, 2011 [2 favorites]

I took a stand-up comedy course in college (yeah, I know, they'll teach anything these days). We analyzed the routines of all the greats; over that semester I watched a ton of comics but my favorite's always been Seinfeld. He gets groans because his show was insanely popular, and his played-out "what's the DEAL with..." bit and mostly inoffensive material turned him into sort of a generic default comedian. But I still think the guy is consistently hilarious, a master of his trade. I haven't heard much from him lately though. This looks like a nice gesture to the fans as the twilight of his career moves on.

Also, about that clip from 1981: Is it just me or was his diction pretty bad back then? I don't know if he always used to talk like that but it sounds like he was choking on his own teeth. He enunciates so much better in his later stuff, without sounding like he's trying to. Guess that's further testimony of his skill at what he does.

I'll admit that I wasn't aware he was still actively performing, and had the image of him as an aloof retired millionaire who once in a decade or so deigned to come down and make insect-related CGI family comedies. Happy to be corrected on that.
posted by anazgnos at 12:41 PM on May 6, 2011

Oh the 90s, back when standup was a thing for some reason.

I think that reason is largely Seinfeld. Back then was when the whole trend started of sitcoms starring standup comedians basically doing their stage show with other actors. Roseanne might have been the first big one, but then Seinfeld, Tim Allen, Brett Butler, Jeff Foxworthy, Ray Romano... all those guys got sitcom contracts.

Also, Comedy Central started up and an absurdly large part of their programming was standup, either rebroadcasts of HBO specials, or bits and pieces of larger routines shown on Short Attention Span Theater.

Whoever Seinfeld hired to do this, they did a bang-up job.

According to the Times link, the site was designed by Ammirati, or as I like to call them, "the ad wizards who came up with this one."

Most pop culture originates in the US, and other countries get it much later. Rock Band 2 came out in the US at the same time as Rock Band 1 did in Australia, so anyone playing it RB1 online in Australia had no one to play with save for a few Aussies that bought it.

Oh dear.

but Seinfeld has to be the most overrated show in history.

Actually, no. In terms of RATED shows in the history of TV, I find it in pretty elite territory. Not just ENORMOUSLY successful in terms of popularity and thus revenues, but also almost always at least okay, often superlative.

The secret to my mind is that it was a show of "manners". That is, here's a few sort of likable people that may seem familiar to various people that you know. But be careful. Watch them closely. Don't be like them. Not if you want to be a thought of as a good person (by others and yourself). Don't be shallow, vain, indulgent, petulant, obnoxious, overbearing, smug, stubborn, self-centered, self-aggrandizing, lazy, petty, cheap ...

Laughing at assholes. Definitely one of my favorite sports.

I watched Seinfeld a little bit, and have never seen more a few minutes of his stand-up, but I find his exploration of the craft of stand-up comedy to be absolutely fascinating. See his documentary Comedian or that new HBO show Talking Funny with Rick Gervais, Chris Rock, and Louis CK (first episode on youtube). Hearing those guys talk shop is really interesting stuff.

But yeah, Talking Funny with Ricky Gervais, Chris Rock and Louis CK is genius.

I listen to a lot of podcasts done by stand-up comedians. Almost all of them can do a cheese ball impression of Jerry Seinfeld, and they tend to use it when things they're doing start sounding like a 'bit'. Like: "What's the deal with...."

In short, he's sort of become the epitome of something. That's pretty big.

However, Larry David's sensibility, and Jason Alexander's portrayal of it were so nihilistic, so gleefully selfish and narcissistic, they were what made the show for me.

Huh, I don't really like his attitude in either article, but the site itself is top-notch. My pc is so old and slow; I always have to pause video to let it buffer. But his clips are zippy. And the site has a really nice, clean look. I'm impressed.

Here's the sting, the rough part: I read this post earlier today, checked out the site, liked it a lot, then tried to find it a few minutes ago using google, with terms liek "seinfeld site" . . . I eventually had to come back to this thread.

That's a fascinating angle, to me: how does a performer or artist redefine themselves in relation to the new media, when one's name has already become a search term with at least a decade of freighted baggage? I'm interested to see whether the site can survive the brutal democracy of the search algorithm. Can Seinfeld overcome Seinfeld?

posted by wabbittwax at 6:02 AM on May 7, 2011

wabbitwax, the purpose of the website is to not offer archives, but to only offer 2 or 3 vids a day. NYT had an article about it. Ostensibly, it's about "Seinfeld portion control", but I imagine it's also some sort of cutting down on piracy thing?

Here's the thing, though: the video interface, as I expected (mwahaha), makes videos trivially easier to download. Even easier than straight flash, which is pretty darn easy.

Furthermore, they don't seem to restrict access to old videos. For instance, here are yesterdays ( (they also come in webm and flv if you can't view mp4):

cdn.jerryseinfeld.com/assets/19810506_bpa2vi.mp4

Even though I liked Seinfeld as a show and a comedian, I understand how oversaturation of something can lead to really getting sick of it (i.e. I loved Nirvana as a teen, now when I hear the opening riff of Smells Like Teen Spirit, changing the station is just muscle memory). That said, hating Jerry Seinfeld is like hating Steve Jobs: you might think he's overrated, you might think he doesn't deserve the credit he does, you might think he's a dick, and you might even dislike his product, but like it or not, he changed shit.

Also, and I'm just gonna say it, Jerry Seinfeld is kind of a smug prick, but so is Steve Martin.

Seinfeld was a staple show for me in its hey day, and well after. I watched it every day in syndication for years. I've easily watched the whole series 3-4 times over. Having said that, if I go back and watch any of the old seasons (seasons 1-3, maybe?) I find it pretty painful.

Also, the trailer for the movie Comedian remains one of my all time favourite movie trailers. Which is kinda funny, since I never actually saw the movie.

I love that I can go and check out 3 old bits... But for all of you going on about what an awesome design this is, I have complaints:

1) No RSS feed
2) No archives
3) Trying to open up pages in new tabs (ctrl-clicking) doesn't work. It just opens it up in the current window. Boooo.

Seasons one through three were made twenty years ago. That's what's painful to think about. I've stumbled across episodes and marvelled at how fast the show has aged, but they really haven't. It's just that time is going by really fast these days. Who do I talk to about that?
