I flagged it because it's more 'fuck Philly sports fans, they are all assholes and behave like dicks.' A jerkoff from Cherry Hill, New Jersey acted like an asshole at a Phillies game. He's lucky the cop from Easton was level headed, because if he had puked on the offspring of a Philly cop we'd be having a grar police abuse FPP.

Jesus, can someone put out a warrant for the author of that article, for abuse of the English language?

"He leaned forward, he projectile vomited all over me and my daughter," Vangelo said with a look of hurt splashed across his face.

Clemens then began wailing on Vangelo after he pushed him away from the girl -- hitting the off-duty officer in the head and neck, causing his ear to bleed, police said.

a) "Waling" as in "hitting" is a slang term
b) and it's "waling" or possibly "whaling" but not "wailing"
and
c) that's just terrible, you sound like you're in 7th grade, drjimmy wrote with a look of hurt splashed across his face.

Seriously though 132 people were arrested at a Dodgers game the other day

This is a red herring. Unlike many other sports venues, tailgating is not allowed at Dodger stadium. Most years, the cops turn a blind eye on Opening Day and having a few beers in the parking lot before the game is overlooked. For the rest of the season, you could drink if you sat inside your veichle and didn't make it obvious.

But, every once in a while (when the Giants come to town) people get drunk and someone gets stabbed/shot.

This year, the LAPD captain in charge of the area said they were going to be super aggressive* and send a message to people who try to tailgate. This included cops with bullhorns at 6am warning people what would happen if they were caught. Well, obviously, not everyone took it seriously and a whole bunch of people got arrested.

It's not like there was a 132 people large drunken brawl in the the left field pavilion. Although, I guess that kind of stuff happened in the past which is why alcohol wasn't sold out there until recently :-)

*The LAPD police academy is literally next door to the Stadium. The instructors could have just walked all the recruits over to the parking lot and gave them some good practice in arresting people :-)

All three are polite, kind and - while fervent supporters of their team - excellent sports. And the minister is originally from New Jersey.

Three of the nicest people I know, actually.

So, anyhow, when I think of the Phillies, I think of them.

Alas, its always the loudest, worst members of a group that end up being portrayed as the representative sample of that group.

Its strikes me that the only group the barfy dude represents are obnoxious, drunken sports guys. I suggest that even most of that demographic would disavow barfy dude.

I understand why they might prefer one team to win versus the other. But to actually care to the point that they get upset or cry or whatever? It makes no sense.

And why do people say "we" when they are talking about team that they are a fan of? As in, "We have a tough game in Boston tonight" or "We shouldn't have traded for Johnson." Are you on the team? Do you even know any of the players?

People like U2. They don't say, "I love our new album" or "We should play smaller arenas next time."

Sports are simulated tribal warfare. They fulfill our need to root for warriors from our clan to defeat warriors from another clan on a field of battle. That's the button it's pressing, and that's why it sometimes leads to violence among fans.

To be one hundred percent honest I don't buy it. Who hasn't wanted to put an off duty cop or bouncer whose throwing excess grar and weight around, in their place? Not saying anyone is a genius or fantastic or defensible person for puking on kids (and even worse for coming to blows over it), but I pretty much never buy a cop's side of the story and I'm not going to start now. All I am saying, is I think there's more to the story and it probably doesn't make the poor cop father with a hurt look on his wittle face look quite as saintly as he's painting himself.

The same week I found out I was pregnant, I went to see the Eagles at Giants stadium. Giants fans were throwing beer bottles (the plastic ones, sure) at Eagles fans. We saw fights, fistfights, and fans of both teams were ejected for it. The Giants fans were violent, and scary and picking fights - so much so that we were scared given I was only just pregnant. So you know what we did? As the away-team fans instead of starting a fight, we LEFT. The cop should have taken his daughters and gotten out of a situation that was clearly turning bad, fast. My guess is instead he wanted to throw is off-duty-cop weight around.

I thought about posting about this when I heard it this morning, and jsut thought - well, if we are going to post every time someone somewhere acts like an asshole (note: because I think both sides probably did), then the front page will be busy fast. Go Phils!! Okay, well, go Mets, I hate the Phils. But whatever.

I was in my firm's corporate season seats.

To be fair, I lived in New York a long time (10 years), and have seen a few Eagles games at Giants stadium. One was, I believe, the first NFL game after September 11. IIRC, and I might not, the Eagles ended a perhaps 6 or 7 game streak of losses to the Giants, beating them at home. I was there with other female friends, decked out head to toe in Eagles gear, drunk, cheering, screaming. Even at a high-emotion game where NY was losing, the most aggressive thing any fan did toward us was offer us some pretzels. Compared to the more recent game where NY was winning, with something like 13 sacks on McNabb, it was a whole different world. Ahh, but I still love it.

Unfortunately, the violence, intimidation, etc. are part and parcel, and if this thread proved anything its that no one city is solely to blame. Lots of people hurt over professional sports rivalries - something that is among the lowest things on the scale of importance I can think of.

Just be glad we have evolved into these silly traditions, and not the old school stadium sports where if you misbehaved, they tossed YOU to the lion also.

As a Redskins fan, I have childhood memories of watching the Body Bag Game live on Monday Night Football.. Also see - Section 700 at the old Veterans Stadium, which had its own JAIL, the place was so rowdy.

gotta love the NFC East. Philly fans.. SMH. I mean, it's the Nats. Why are you even going to get mad at them.

It wasn't a Nats fan. The jail/court was mentioned in the FPP along with the rest of the list of old and tired Philly bashing stories.

I was in my firm's corporate season seats.

Huh, I've never run into anything like that, but then I've never really been to a high-intensity rivals game.

It's best to go right to security, ask to be moved if possible as well. Most stadiums have numbers you can text to in order to report bad behavior too.

Yeah, and it sucks I'd even have to do that.
I suppose the days of not swearing and acting the fool in front of children are long gone.

I think that might be a bit of a good ol' days that never existed thing. Security is WAYYYYY better than it has ever been before in stadiums. You simply don't gather tens of thousands of likely drunk people in one place without the full spectrum of bad behavior humans are capable of.

As a Yankee fan living in Boston who grew up in Jersey between NYC and Philly, I can say I'd sooner wear my Yankee cap (that I've *always* worn at Fenway when the Yankees are in town) in Southie, naked, with "Red Sox Suck!" in lipstick on my bare torso, before I brought it concealed in bag to Philadelphia.

You can post links from shenanigans in other cities all you want - if you haven't experienced a major sporting event in Philly as a visiting fan... You. Don't. Understand.

furiousxgeorge, you are replying a lot in this thread. I'm honestly not trying to take any sides on whatever the issue is, because frankly I haven't read too many of the comments. All I am saying is, scrolling down I've seen your name a lot, and in previous experiences on MeFi this usually ends up badly for the commenter.

I'd also like to add, if I'm totally off-base, I apologize.

It's sports.

Have other draft picks ever gotten booed?

Lots of them, for lots of teams. That is such a non-story.

Adam Eaton got booed because he did nothing to deserve his World Series ring. He was being paid $9 million NOT to play because he was so awful. He was dropped by the team so that he wouldn't screw up the Phils' pennant race. It's not a classy move to show up to claim a ring you didn't earn, hence the booing.

Santa Claus didn't get booed, because there's no such thing as Santa Claus.

Seriously, the Philly sports fans meme is just fodder for lazy sportswriters. This kind of behavior is common in many cities with passionate sports fanbases.

Just ask Cleveland Indians fans about the Ten Cent Beer riot.

Or Dodgers fans about who getting shot at the game.

Or Yankess fans about the "Why Are You Gay" chant at Yankees Stadium.

Or Boston fans about attacking Gary Sheffield on the field.

Or Chicago fans about throwing beer at players on the field, or forcing an unpopular (and admittedly stupid) fellow fan to go into hiding after receiving death threats, or attacking an umpire on the field, or attacking a coach on the field.

Or any hockey, rugby or soccer fan from any other country in the world, where bad fan behavior is commonplace and on a scale far beyond what we experience here in the States.

This incident at the Phillies game might be an extreme occurrence; but, I think it is indicative of the lack of respect in our culture. Before 2009 I lived in Japan for five years... you would never hear of such a thing there, especially at a baseball game... I moved back from Japan to Cherry Hill NJ, the same town were Mathew Clemmens - the guy that made himself vomit on the police captain and his daughter at a Phillies game. I grew up playing baseball in this area and I am a big Phillies fan. This story resonates on a personal level with thousands of fans and families in the Philadelphia and New Jersey area like mine. Coming home from Japan, I could not wait to take my kids to a Phillies game at ">Citizens Bank Park and relive those nostalgic baseball games of my youth... In these economic times it is hard to carve out a little time in our schedule to share with our children at a baseball game. I am nervous to have them out at public venues at all anymore... You only have to look in the paper the local paper to realize these are not freak happenings in a rundown inner city...; it is a sign of the times. The deterioration of American values is robbing our country on an exponential scale...

I'm glad I grew up in STL...the only people we despise are people from Chicago...but there is very little fisticuffs considering that STL is one of the more dangerously violent cities in America.

For the record the fans in Philly booed the selection of McNabb because they wanted the Eagles to pick running back Ricky Williams at #2. Mike Ditka then traded his entire draft plus a first and third round pick the following year (a completely INSANE amount of picks) for the right to move up and select Williams at #5. Williams then proceeded to put up outstanding numbers but failed several drug tests (weed and something else, not steroids) was suspended for an entire season, retired after 5 years, was diagnosed with clinical depression and social anxiety disorder, and traveled to India to study holistic medicine (a really interesting story). He recently came back to football and has had a couple of good seasons with the Dolphins. McNabb, on the other hand, brought his team to 5 NFC championships (4 in a row), puked in the Super Bowl and smiles a lot after bad plays. You take your pick.

No shortage of idiots in STL either.

Also, can we talk about how strange this is?

Once my dad's friend threw up on his (my dad's) date's beehive hairdo at a party in high school.

Dad implied it was kind of like seeing a member of the B-52s with frosting dripping down their head.

Of course, he did go to security. And this nutcase objected to having some righteous fun-loving all-american sports fans thrown out, and so continued the hooliganism?
