Who else could substitute for Chris Squire?

Awesome in every way. I recently saw the excellent Rush cover band Lotus Land, and during their encore they did a Yes/Rush mash-up that worked surprisingly well.

I mean, given Lifeson's and Lee's induction speeches for Yes, it must be surreal to be 63 years old and suddenly be playing with your childhood heroes on one of their most famous songs.

Some amazing performances there as per usual. Lenny Kravitz's Prince tribute was great. He's one of the only people I can think of who even approaches Prince in term of star quality.

Who else could substitute for Chris Squire?

When there was that Yes schism in the late 80's, "Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe" hired Tony Levin to tour. Levin got sick during the tour, and they called Jeff Berlin to substitute on an emergency basis. Like he had 3 days notice and one rehearsal. And, after Squire became ill, they used a guy who had produced Yes in the 90's, Billy Sherwood, who is still playing with the band, to do the tour that was scheduled.

But sure, none of those guys would have brought the excitement or prog gravitas of Geddy Lee's guest spot, for the induction.

OK, I like to answer rhetorical questions

I love Lenny Kravitz, but when I think of someone who matches Prince's charisma my mind goes immediately to Janelle Monae.

There have been so many members of Yes over the years that there's separate Wikipedia page just to track the different permutations.

Interesting, where most Wikipedia band pages have a a color-coded timeline to track membership, that one represents the information as a symplectic structure on a non-simply connected 4-manifold.

As an aside - an old neighbor of mine was an employee of Rush for 20 years and claims Geddy is a true gentleman. Just an all around nice guy.

Fragile is such a great album. I listen to it regularly. I don't listen to Rush anymore, as much as I love them, their music seems very dated to me in a way, for example, that Fragile does not.

One of the first albums I ever bought, I think in seventh grade, was Wakeman's Journey to the Center of the Earth. I've never owned an airbrushed panel van, but that doesn't mean I haven't always secretly wanted one.

Ivan, in Ozzy Osbourne's autobiography, he talks about a period where Sabbath and Yes were recording in different parts of the same studio. Yes were meditating and eating macriobiotic meals and Sabbath, were, well, being Sabbath. Rick Wakeman would often sneak over to Sabbath's area to drink whiskey and eat burgers.

I've long felt that Rick Wakeman's ideal job would be doing stand-up in a 1970s working man's club - a sort of Bernard Manning type who could play for the singalong at the end of the night.

We've discussed this before, and let me say again that it's true – I have seen, with mine own eyes, a) that Rick is a great guy and b) the rest of Yes, at a backstage party, huddled in a corner eating macrobiotic rice while he drank beer, ate a burger, and hung out with us.

p.s. I have never paid much attention to Rush – I wouldn't say I loathe them, but they’ve never really appealed to me. However, I recently watched a video feature on Geddy Lee, and he also seems like a great guy.

I'm an old man so this stuff is mother's milk to me. It's a pity that Chris Squire didn't live to see this day but seeing Geddy sit in and rain down thunder gives me some joy. And I think during the speeches everyone breathed a sigh of relief when Alex said something other than blah-blah-blah.

Yes has such a fractious and tangled history and damn, there's some band members that should have been inducted that weren't. But the RnRHOF has always sucked in this regard, making choices that leave fans pulling their hair out.

Also, Jeff Ament's t-shirt omitted Jethro Tull. C'mon man. Fucking Tull?

I was just glad to see Jon Anderson singing with the group. When he had seemingly-career-ending throat problems he 'retired' to live just down the road from me in San Luis Obispo County, then when his voice came back, he tested it with solo shows in tiny clubs in the area (all of which I sadly missed). But then Yes-with-a-new-singer-who-doesn't-sound-like-Jon did a performance at a medium-sized amphitheater just north of here and I thought there was a permanent falling out.

I also had a high-school-bandmate who played the flute and worshiped Ian from Tull and he broke into "Bouree" at random times so often the rest of the woodwind section told him to "cut it out!!!"

I have a weird relationship with Rush. I never paid much attention to them either, especially because years ago the guy on the other side of the wall in my dorm had a copy of Signals when it came out and played it non-stop full blast. He'd put each side on repeat and let it play a couple times, then he'd flip it and do the same, then back to the other side. All day every day. Until one day he suddenly wasn't there anymore.

That was my nightmare Rush story. But 30 years later I realized I kind of liked that album. So now it's on my phone, along with Moving Pictures. Rush is weird.

Anyway, I get to post this again.

I love listening to Roundabout, but can't Rolling Stone afford to get a decent video of the performance?
During the guitar intro, let's focus on Jon, hopping up and down. During the keyboard breaks, let's watch the basses. When the basses and keyboard get together, let's finally see what Steve's doing... oh, not much.

I must admit I find the idea of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the least rock and roll thing I can think of, with the possible exception of fruit jellies in the shape of teddy bears, but I was wondering whether it might be possible to get The Fall in, as that could be quite funny. Especially when Mark E. Smith steps up to the microphone, pint in hand and with a cigarette dangling from his bottom lip, to berate the audience, his spite and aggression undiminished by the fact that no one can understand a word he's saying.

I just finished reading Albert Camus' La Chute, the novel from whose title The Fall purportedly got its name. It's basically a 130-page-long barroom rant, so maybe that the true derivation. But it lacks the transcendental poetry of Mr. Smith's lyrical work.

I hope to dear god that the good people in Cleveland show some respect by never offering their Induction to him.

Which is the problem with the RRHoF. Is there a human being still alive, more or less, who embodies the spirit of rock and roll more than Mark E. Smith?

(And I don't even particularly like The Fall, but credit where credit's due.)

The RRHoF is an exercise in domestication and taxidermy more than celebration.
