Notes from a Southern Pedant: despite the source material, you can tell that the remixers responsible for this aren't Victorian. A Victorian would never call a box of 24 beers a 'case'. It's a 'slab'. A 'case' is filled with that undrinkable swill you heathens to the north and the west drink.

As you were.

yes but Daniel Andrews did not say 'slab' this year

A quick rundown for those outside Australia:

- Daniel Andrews, the State Premier of Victoria, announced the first major Victorian lockdown back on March 23rd. Among other things, he announces although pubs are closed, "that doesn't mean you can have all your mates around to your home and get on the beers".

- Naturally, this press conference is quickly given a house remix.

- The Victorian lockdown becomes increasingly stringent over the next few months, eventually restricting non-essential travel to a 5km bubble. Andrews is a divisive figure, especially as the federal government are sitting on their hands. But it seems to work, for better or worse.

- By early October, people are getting itchy to reopen things. There's a line; "Can we get on the beers yet?"

- October 26. Andrews announces the reopening of numerous public places, most prominently pubs and restaurants. A reporter asks him in the same conference whether he'll be getting on the beers. The house remix is given a re-release in line with the celebration and does quite well.

- December 25: Given the easing of restrictions has still been slow, the Christmas lights are impressive this year.

If you're going to go to the trouble of making a dance track out of a press conference, I expect some deepfake to preserve accurate dialect. Otherwise what is the purpose of art?

The Australian premiers targeting zero instead of "living with the virus" are fucking heroes. Mark McGowan is the reason my parents and remaining grandparent are still alive and when I finally get back to Perth to visit I'm going to hail him as an Imperator so that he can have his Triumph.

The sole delight of 2020 Australian politics was state premiers realising that the electoral upside of eliminating COVID was pretty high and the electoral downside of a lockdown was nowhere near as bad as the electoral downside of incompetence leading to needless death.

This was not an expected result; by rights, we should have had a stupid fucking culture war with tens of thousands dead. Lauren Southern has a television gig. And yet, here we are; the only reason we aren't in the best shape in the English-speaking world is because New Zealand is handling things even better.

Then again, Sydney has an outbreak and it's the Boxing Day sales tomorrow, so that might be all over with.

Burn Sky News to the fucking ground. Burn Rupert's entire fucking empire to the fucking ground, salt the earth, then piss on the ashes.

This is an amazing paragraph.
