Queen + Hip-Hop Mashups = A Night at the Hip Hopera Better than the Grey Album? Cease and desist in 3, 2, 1...

I've listened this through 3 or 4 times, and every time it just reinforces how good the Queen tracks are, even on just a musical level. Often the hippity-hop vocals don't add a heck of a lot. But it's fun, I guess, and makes the day go a bit quicker.

If you like this, you're bound to like the Kleptones' other effort, "Yoshimi Battles the Hip-Hop Robots".

Oh, and another note to say that it's nice that there's no Bohemian Rhapsody at all, in favour of some smaller (better?) songs (e.g. Tenement Funster, Misfire, and, erm, some not from "Sheer Heart Attack")

I think this was a bit more inspired than Yoshimi Battles The Hip Hop Robots was. YBTHHR had a few very inspired tracks ("Are You A Visionary" was fantastic, and I actually think "Have You Come To Realise" is better than "Do You Realize"), in between some low points; ANATHH just seems more consistent to me.

As for the question in the original post - both of the Kleptones albums have been much better than the Grey Album.

And if they didn't get C&D'd for YBTHHR, I don't see any huge reason they'll get C&D'd for this.

[This is great]

Oh yeah, definitely better than "The Grey Album". But then my phlegm-rattling coughs a couple of weeks ago were marginally better than "The Grey Album".

I've been rocking this for the past few days now. In fact, I liked it so much I mirrored it. Eric Kleptone is actually citing my mirror [using freecache as an extra buffer] as the sole mirror for the non-torrent link.

If any of you are going to grab the album or blog it, please be kind to my server and keep the freecache link intact. I also have a copy of the album split into individual tracks [instead of one big file online], but I'm not bold enough to post a link to that. If anyone's interested in it, contact me and I'll see what I can do about getting you a link to it. Cheers!

I've been mirroring the entire thing, also. Feel free to spread this around.

I've having difficulty splitting the MP3 using the CUE file... keep getting a weird error, probably due to it being VBR.

Oh, and the names aren't filled out in the CUE file; I'll post my updated file soon.

waxpancake, you are my hero. thank you very much.

The torrent has many seeds attached right now, for those of us who go that way.

definitely better than the grey album, but will it be as notorious? grey tuesday and all that... I guess DJ Danger Mouse got in crap because he tried to distribute it on CD.

The Beastie Boys section is particularly inspired.

Does anybody know the source of the male rap vocal on the sixth track, "Rock"? Google is completely failing me.
posted by waxpancake at 4:56 PM on September 22, 2004

waxpancake, if i had to guess (based on the lyrics), i'd say it's KRS-One, slightly sped up, though i don't know the specific song. (second guess: Jeru the Damaja). i'd be very surprised if you found the lyrics on Google.

(i assume you're not referring to Iggy Pop ...)

After listening to this through, I now am sure I have the entire Night at the Opera album memorized.
posted by Space Coyote at 5:42 PM on September 22, 2004

I don't think any "Night at the Opera" tracks are used. There's stuff from "Queen", "Queen II", "Sheer Heart Attack", "News of the World" and some later albums, but none from "Opera" or "Day at the Races". This is from memory, mind, so feel free to correct me.

I love the start: "Klytus I'm booooooooooored".

I just wanna say thanx, that rocked.

If you like this, be sure to check out Negativland (older stuff - Escape from Noise and before) and The Tape Beatles. Same idea, years before.

I was enjoying this, but not really ENJOYING it (meaning stuff didnt feel glued so much as rap tracks over guitar) until the heaven on earth/under pressure moment, which leads into latyrx and then beastie boys with the i wanna be free. FUCK THAT'S GORGEOUS. Well worth the wait while the beginning of the album figures itself out.

that shit approaches some of the best of this stuff, i.e. Brainfreeze and all that. Not bad not bad. (thanks waxpancake for the mp3)

pssst: I'm mirroring it here for a day or two. And I've tagged the songs, to boot!

Um, Am I the only one who thinks this kinda sucks. This is just poorly pasted BPM matching. Danger mouse rocked all over this.
posted by jmgorman at 9:47 PM on September 22, 2004

No, the Grey Album was just poorly pasted BPM matching. This has enough mashing-up going on to make it interesting.

oh, and waxpancake:

The vocals on "Rock" are by Akrobatik, from Killa Kela's "Heavy Artillery"

the high point for me, i think:

Deborah Cox "Just Be Good to Me" mashed up with the Flash Gordon theme song.

I have to say I was most excited by the sampling of the Mooninites (ATHF) at the begining and end. That and "Bladerunner" at the end. Good shit!!!

I'm trying to compile a complete list of primary samples from the album. (Thanks, rxrfrx.) Let me know if you can help out.

Hooray, more Kleptones!

Wow, this is great. It's as good as Uneasy Listening, much better than the other recent CDJ mashups that have been floating around lately.
