Cassette from My Ex is a project to "share the stories and the soundtrack to your earliest loves." Also features a great entry from Claudia Gonson of Magnetic Fields.

Claudia Gonson is the pianist/drummer/backing vocalist for The Magnetic Fields . Her day job is as Stephin Merritt’s manager, handling all his band projects as well as theater, ads and film work. Currently Stephin is writing a musical version of the Neil Gaiman story “Coraline” for the stage

Is it still a mixtape if all the songs are by the same artist? If so, an ex gave me a Tom Waits mixtape like ten years ago. About two hours, off like ten CDs. In retrospect, I think I kinda fucked up when I let that one go, but Oh Well.

I was thinking about this, and I don't think that I have any mixtapes from exes. For the most part, I've been a net mix exporter, giving them to girls and friends and girlfriends, but only really getting them back from other pals who were into music, rather than just dating me.
The only girl I dated who made me tapes is the girl I'm still dating now (and the tapes were fantastic, and I still have 'em and love 'em). They were much better than the tapes I made her.
Oh, and the last mixtape that I made, or made half of, I sent off to Jessamyn and vaguely regret it because it was a pretty great tape (I thought). Now my tape deck's broken.

Do CD's count? I dated a much younger woman several years ago and our variable musical tastes were the subject of many 'discussions'. While we both liked bands like The Pixies, Bowie, Yo La Tengo and Tool, her tastes also ran to really hard-core Goth-punk bands like Christian Death, a genre I loathe. On the other hand I also love opera, jazz, and big-band/Sinatra-esque stuff that she couldnt stand to be in the same room with. Anyway, we collaborated on a really bizarre mix CD that actually worked out pretty well if you put it on random play. Dont have a playlist or the mix unfortunately - I lost that when we split. The creation of that disc was better than the end result, I reckon. I miss that.

I still have a mixtape my current boyfriend made me ca. 1991, complete with hand-drawn cover (and it's brilliant, that cover). He's tried to steal it back and destroy it, as it's overwrought with high school era hormonal drama, but I'll never let him. I love that damn tape.

This post just made me really, really happy. I have a huge collection of mixtapes* from exes that I recently re-discovered and am obsessed with, and I'm excited to put together an entry of my own to contribute to the project.
Mixtapes, because mix CDs are nowhere near to the same thing. Mix CDs are shorter, allow one to skip tracks they don't like instead of appreciating the piece as an entire work, require less effort to make (especially when you're talking transitions on mixtapes and I dated a few musicians, so...), and generally strike me as way less authentic. /pretention.

I had to bust out my cardboard box of cassette tapes and see what was there. I found several mixtapes that an ex and I would make before each camping trip we took. Random sampling of bands represented: Allman Brothers, Deep Purple, Redd Kross, Mazzy Star, Judas Priest, Dinosaur Jr, Sundial, KISS, B-52s. He would do one side and I would do the other, then we'd listen to them on the drive up and by the campfire. I found a mystery tape called "Proto Metal: 1968-1974". I found one from an Italian penpal I forgot I had. I found one from someone named "Scab," with a note attached that he was pissed that he forgot to put Skynyrd on it.
Damn, I sure wish I still had a tape deck.

I have a favorite mixtape that my wife made me on our first Valentine's Day (or maybe my birthday ...), but I won't share it. Too personal, and her taste in music sucked back then. *click* Just kidding, hon!
A girl I broke up with 11th grade gave me an embarrassingly syrupy mix tape (with a few good songs that we both liked). The rest were Owner of a Lonely Heart, You Make Lovin' Fun, and other songs that apparently expressed her current situation.
A girl who broke my heart in college made me an awesome mix tape with Roxy Music and Elvis Costello. I should have known it was too good to last.
My exes got some *kickass* mixtapes from me. Hey, ladies!
