To see the White Russian renaissance in full bloom, it is instructive to attend a Lebowski Fest. With commentary from the original Dude. (NY Times)

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I once wrote a fairly detailed essay about The Dude's drinking habits.

Here's a link to the Ace of Cakes episode, The Big Cake-owski on Fancast. In it, they make a ginormous fake White Russian out of sugar and more sugar.

A popular deviation is the Slim Russian, made with either soy or low-fat milk.

That is very un-Dude. Say what you will about the caloric content of the White Russian, at least it's a cocktail.

The links are not the issue here, Dude. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand, Dude. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, Dude, longsleeves is not the preferred nomenclature. Dress shirt, please.

Ah c'mon. A post about White Russians would have been interesting...the Lebowski angle is just desperate. For both the post and the single, lonely, link.

My friend and I used to go bowling at Hollywood Star Lanes (the alley where The Big Lebowski scenes were shot as it was right down the street from where we worked. On a Thursday or Saturday night (circa 2001), you could a hundred empty white russian glasses on the bar as the bartenders tried to frenetically keep up with orders.

White russians were the first alcoholic drinks I ever consumed, because of that movie. I've since decided they're not very good for me. Only drinks I've encountered that turn me into an angry drunk. And god damn, the hangovers.

A tasty alternate that I invented is the "White Thai", just substitute coconut milk for cow's milk.

And don't forget the "White Lebowski", made with non-dairy coffee creamer.

Which ends when the stars come out on Saturday night, right? It makes sense that Friday night would be the quiet night, if the achievers are observant.

The estimable Glacier Ice Cream in Boulder has a new "Big Lebowski" alcoholic ice cream flavor. DAMN this dairy allergy!

One of the funniest bits I heard in stand-up was a guy who asked, "What if the neural messages in the brain were like newspaper headlines?"....in itself not funny, until he pipes up with my still-favorite-fantasy headline,"Millions Die As White Russians Invade Cerebellum"

One day in High School I was trying to gross out my friends, and I made a drink out of vodka and milk. I was utterly astonished to find that it was actually good. The Kahlua is a nice touch, though.

I remember being very proud of myself in college when I came up with the novel idea to substitute Baileys for the milk in a a white russian. Of course, later I found out I had reinvented the mudslide. Making those with vanilla ice cream and extra vodka made for a very enjoyable fourth of July one summer.

You know, this is a perfect example of why you don't get your cultural commentary from the Times. Remember that story on Steampunk a few months back, a year or two after the rest of the Internet had heard about, geeked out about, and moved on from the dalliance?

I just . . . we all love the fucking movie, and I will happily drink a White Russian, but, come on, ten YEARS after the movie you're doing the article? How is this more relevant or interesting now than it would have been five years ago, when Lebowski already had a dedicated following and we were all choking back quarts of Kahlua and dairy in our dorms?

Anyway, after reading that piece in the Sunday Styles section last week I went out and got one of those new "Tamagotchis" so I've got to get back to feeding and playing with it.

OK...mea culpa. I made a stupid comment...didn't contribute anything to the thread and added to a pile on. Pretty impressive collection of etiquette breaches in one short attempt at creative criticism.

Sorry all.

...vowing to avoid producing that kind of useless crap in the future...
