Why go there when you can go here?

It's good to be the king.

Too greasy for my taste.

That is some fine web design. Ain't nothing like white text on a white background. (It shows up with a blue background in IE.)

It goes to show you that Big Oil isn't 100% evil.

This is an event that will prove that oil and water really do mix.

The festival also emphasizes the unique way in which these two seemingly different industries work hand-in-hand culturally and environmentally in this area of the "Cajun Coast."

Well, at least they're up front about the theme.

(on preview-- grouse, the text would just distract from the bouncing shrimp anyway.)

I was wondering how long before someone pointed out the king and queen. She looks like a young Christina Applegate and he looks like the reanimated corpse of Burt Reynolds circa 2045.

I bet when you say it fast it sounds like "Shrimp in Petroleum."

Yum!

Nice scepter, though. For a shrimp king, anyway.

Hey, easy on the NSFW there. Is that a shrimp mating dance?

OMG! Old man, can't you see she's just marring you to inherit your kingdom of glorious shrimps and petroleums?

Hey, wow, we actually had Rockin' Dopsie Jr. perform at our college graduation party back in (ack) 1993.

Trivia: RD Jr at the time was backing up his father, Senior, who was the second "King of Zydeco," following Clifton Chenier. Senior is also best known as the zydeco performer on Paul Simon's Graceland -- he was a stand-in for Chenier, who had just passed.

Thanks shrimp and oil for taking me back ;-)

He played at mine too diastematic. That guy got around apparently, then again I went to school in Mississsippi, so he didn't get that far I suppose.

“Shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sautee it. There's, um, shrimp kebabs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo, pan fried, deep fried, stir fried. There's pineapple shrimp and lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich... That's, that's about it.”

That festival looks like a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I already have plans this weekend to go to the Gumbo and Forced Sodomy Festival.

Don't bother, ColdChef. I heard that Paul Addis already sodomized the gumbo.

Louisiana is like a lost country, set adrift in 1972.

No way! I'm actually going to that this weekend!

This is Louisiana culture at its most deliciously surreal. A friend dragged me last year and I had a blast. And don't worry about missing out on the sodomy fest. When New Orleanians venture out into the rest of the state, they usually bring sodomy with them.

Oh, and did I mention that it's the same weekend as Southern Decadence? Or was that what you were referring to, ColdChef?

Son of a whore. Southern Decadence.

Son of a whore. Southern Decadence.
Ooooh. Change of plans.
Q. Do many lesbians attend Southern Decadence?
A. While predominantly a gay male event, a surprising number of lesbians have discovered the unique fun of Southern Decadence, and return year after year. Southern Decadence is for the entire gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community, and is very well attended by all.

What about us faux-mos?

diastematic, I had the privilege of having RD Sr pull me on stage to dance with him in Tipitinas some years ago.

Pollomacho, I can attest RD Jr that has indeed made it as far as Maine. He didn't dance with me tho.

Laissez les bons temps rouler.

It's fairly standard at these events for the king to be a well-established (read: old rich retired) member of the community, chosen for his service to the organization... while the queen is a 19- or 20-year-old debutante, chosen for her pedigree and her parents' ability to pay for a gown that costs roughly the GNP of Burkina Faso.

(Lest y'all think that Morgan City, Louisiana has the monopoly on lechery)

True story, my second proudest moment from college, after the show while I helped the band pack up, RD Jr. told me, and I quote, "Son, you one dancin' mothafucka."

First was when Koko Tailor asked me to get on stage and sing Strokin' with her as she ground herself on my skinny white leg at about 3 AM at the Subway. I suppose graduating in 4 years has to come in there somewhere though.
