It would be awesome if this actually matched up with PetFinder somehow and used the clever idea to help some cats get adopted.

I'm not sure the appropriate level of shame to feel about the fact that my first action after clicking the link was to put my chihuahua up on my desk so they could talk to the cat.

I need a hobby.

HOT BUTTERED CATS!

I really should open a cat cafe here in Seattle. I'm kind of not joking. With the right location and building it might be a hit and even a financial success.

I'm thinking of a space like the Half Price Books building or maybe Bauhaus Coffee where there's lots of nooks and windows where you could hang out with a bunch of very friendly cats for an afternoon or a lunch break. There would be nice chairs and couches or bean bags to nap on and very nice, chill music. There would be a simple attached cafe so you could get some coffee or tea or cocoa or something, or you could bring your own, or you could buy some kitty treats. You could even put in some warm full spectrum sun lamps for guests and cats to recharge by, maybe a fire place.

On the weekends I could throw kitty raves and ambient sleep concerts.

You might even be able to partially or fully fund it by running it as a non profit no-kill shelter and cat sanctuary and still charge a nominal or flexible admission.

Okay loquacious and Mizu just transformed into Ron Swanson and April Ludgate for me. Cats and Recreation.

You laugh now but just wait until the cat shortage hits. It's going to be a catastrophe.

I have supplies of fresh cats hidden in 67 different places in my bedroom alone, and 32 of them are within reach of my bed.

I've also spent the last 15 years secretly developing a freeze dried instant emergency kitten. All you need to do is add water from a can of tuna and you have instant kitten. Unfortunately or fortunately they only seem to last about 24 hours. But I'm trying to get that up to at least a week or so, with instant dial-a-kitten variations that just last as short as an hour, suitable for use by busy businesspeople who just want a little kitten on their lunch break or after work.

I've tried developing instant cat but the freeze drying process doesn't seem to work as well on larger cats, just kittens. On larger cats they tend to come out of it a bit... cranky and wrinkly. And no one likes a crumpled cat.

But there's also some potential for cat on a stick for people who would like some cat to go to fit in with their busy lifestyles but there have been some setbacks. And a lot of stitches and ER visits. No, the cats are fine but I have scars in places I probably shouldn't talk about in front of mixed company.

Yeah, I know, but Tokyo is kind of prohibitively expensive to visit for an afternoon for most Seattlites. I am totally ripping off the idea of "cat cafe" but it's not really a far stretch from "book store or coffee house I prefer to go to because: cat"

I'm actually pondering if I could wrangle an art grant and an empty storefront to run a trial cat cafe.

There's an appliance store in my town that has cats living in it. I mean, yeah, you've got your resident cats at the coffee houses and bookstores, but appliance store cats must be few in number. They sleep on top of the fridges and between the washing machines. I personally haven't bought any appliances there, but they've fixed my vacuum a few times. (The people, not the cats. I assume.)

A woman in London crowdfunded her cat cafe, so you may not even need to ask for a grant. Kickstart it.

Hah. You're obviously a dog person or something.

Well clearly a dog cafe would be better than a cat cafe. Just imagine walking into a dog cafe, where all the dogs are the sort of dogs who love to meet new people - certainly you'd need more selection in your cafe "staff" than you would for cats - and the dogs are all OH MAN HEY EVERYBODY NEW PERSON THIS NEW GUY IS THE BEST GUY EVER HE IS MY BEST FRIEND ALREADY HOORAY DOES HE WANT TO PLAY A GAME MAYBE OR JUST CUDDLE PERHAPS I'M GOOD WITH ANYTHING JUST LET ME KNOW MISTER NEW BEST FRIEND

Cats would just kind of look at you as you came in and then immediately lose interest unless you did something for them. Because they are cats.

Cats would just kind of look at you as you came in and then immediately lose interest unless you did something for them. Because they are cats.

You need to ask yourself if it's you and your dislike of cats or the cats. Because most cats don't treat me that way, or other people who like cats.

I also really like dogs and I was also considering a dog cafe, but the thing about dogs is is that you don't need a dog cafe to hang out with dogs, and there are plenty of dog friendly places in Seattle where you can bring your own dog or meet dogs while you have a beer or coffee or something. Or you just go to the dog park or make friends with someone who needs a dog who needs walking.

Because like you said dogs are all OH MAN HEY EVERYBODY NEW PERSON THIS NEW GUY IS THE BEST GUY EVER HE IS MY BEST FRIEND ALREADY HOORAY.

Which isn't really relaxing at all, or special, because dogs are that way to almost everyone. Heck, I have a friend in my neighborhood with a giant derpy 100 lb boxer dog and he's so absolutely beside himself with joy to see me every time I visit that it's actually hazardous to my health. One time he accidentally head-butted me so hard he rearranged my jaw and about knocked my ass out cold.

But when a cat chooses to hang out with you it's, y'know, a moment and special. And it's generally much calmer and more quiet and reserved. Which is why cats and bookstores and cafes tend to go together better than dogs do.

You need to ask yourself if it's you and your dislike of cats or the cats. Because most cats don't treat me that way, or other people who like cats.

Oh man. So me and my partner have an orphaned feral cat who really does just hate everyone. No really. Even you.

And what I've learned from this is, with the exception of a few hardcore cat haters, every last person in the world thinks they're unusually good with cats. It's like being a way-above-average driver, or being exceptionally good at cunnilingus. Every last one of us is walking around thinking "Okay, a bunch of people say they're good at this shit. But I really am."

Because every time we have company over, we warn them: "Look, please don't try to pet our cat. He might let you come near him, because he isn't all that timid. But he hates everyone. No really. Even you." And sometimes to drive the point home we tell the story about the last cat-lover we had over, who we warned not to pet our cat because he hates everyone (no really; even you), and who decided he was special and failed to heed the warning and got his ass bit.

And what does our new guest do? Decides he's special! Fails to heed the warning! Gets his ass bit!

We're thinking of instituting a new rule. Nobody can visit us who gets along well with cats. It's dedicated cat-haters only from now on. They're the only ones who are safe here.
