Petition for the Release of Ai Wei Wei

China's Greatest Living Artist Held by Chinese Gov't on Trumped Up Charges On April 3, 2011, Ai WeiWei, perhaps China's greatest living artist, was placed under arrest on alleged charges of "financial crimes." The repressive Chinese government should not be allowed to get away with what is obviously an just attempt to silence Ai WeiWei and preserve the image that all is well within Chinese society. Please sign the petition for Ai WeiWei's release and encourage others to visit the site. If there is enough international interest shown in the plight of Ai WeiWei, perhaps his release can be obtained.

This post was deleted for the following reason: appreciate the thought but "sign my petition" posts are not good for the front page. Perhaps make a post about Ai WeiWei? -- jessamyn

Sorry... Important but editorialized. Flagged as editorial content on the main page. :/

Sorry, I know which way Metafilter will skew but the post is poorly written, flagged for editorializing. Normally I wouldn't say anything and just flag but yeah, I sympathize.

And sorely lacking in background info.

Here's FRONTLINE's recent magazine piece on Ai Weiwei.

And here's a followup on his arrest.
