I saw this the other day, and in combination with similar information from other sources, it has inspired me to sit less and walk around more. That being said, this seems like an odd site to be hosting and strikes me as seo link bait.

No, my job is killing me. MetaFilter is just a momentary diversion on the way to the grave.

I wonder if the artwork and style of the infographic were intentionally chosen to discredit their data, or whether that was an accident.

Anyway, the data being what it is, it still seems like a huge leap to say that sitting for 8 hours kills you faster than working on your feet for 8 hours.

Correlation is not causation.

People who are dying have a tenancy to sit down first.

I seem to recall at least two posts about this in the last 12 months.

Here's one.

(ahem that's actually 14 months ago...)

Jumping out of an airplane reading metafilter (we can do that now, interesting...) will kill you faster, and with your luck the last thing you'll read is that cortex just deleted your fpp about creative suicide because it was a self link.

Each extra hour of watching TV=11% higher death risk.

What does that even mean? If I spend a weekend vegging out watching Seinfeld, does that mean I have a 176% higher death risk? Higher than what? Than my death risk of 100% that exists simply by my being alive?
posted by phunniemee at 9:07 AM on May 13, 2011

The answer is clear: outlaw sitting!

Well, first it ruins yer eyes, then it gives you a heart attack. Only the advent of post-literate society can save us.

Abraham Lincoln was sitting when he died, so there's that data point.

What does that even mean?

I read it as meaning an extra hour, on average, per day.

I read that Charlie Rose uses a standing desk - I have always wanted to try one.

I jumped up and ran away from my computer. But I tripped and fell down the steps in front of my house. I broke my neck and now I'm dead.

I actually saw this the other day, and was sufficiently weirded out that I finally followed through with an old project- yesterday I brought one of those $7 IKEA coffee tables that I was no longer using at home to work, took off about 3.75 inches off each leg with a hacksaw and turned my desk into a standing desk. You can see my current set-up here.
I'm only on my second day, but I think I like working standing better than sitting, for a couple of reasons. I work in an open office environment and, as sad as it seems, I think I wasn't taking as much advantage of that as I could- relying too heavily on e-mail and IM when I could walk over and discuss things face to face with people. Standing, I've removed even the smallest difficulty from moving around my office. I feel like I'm a bit more on task, as well (although, you know, I'm still commenting here....). We'll see if I stick with it.
One thing to note- good shoes are a must! I wore boat shoes in today, and I am definitely feeling it in the soles of my feet right now, as they're pressing directly on the insole.

I'm not sure I can get away with that whole sit-at-a-135°-angle thing. Not at my desk, anyway. My posture's bad enough already with my chair back at 100° or so.

I would love to know the story of how such a cool infographic came out of such a sketchy-looking site.

135° is the sweet spot?

Now I finally have medical evidence to support my belief that I should be allowed to work from home, in bed, while watching TV and occasionally sleeping.

It's for health reasons!

aught: ""medicalbillingandcoding-dot-com""

A while back the art/ pop culture blog Super Punch told how they were approached by someone to get paid to post an infographic the company would provide. The infographics always contained a link to a site that wasn't directly related to the subject matter. They thought it shady and didn't respond, but saw many blogs post one such infographic the following day (in that case it was "19 Things You Didn't Know About Star Wars" and it linked to an online education site). The problem is, of course, some blogs might be reposting simply because the topic seems interesting or the graphics punchy, but some might be getting paid to play the SEO game.

This appears to be in the same vein and I'm a little nervous we're willingly doing a Pepsi Blue on ourselves by linking directly to the shill site.

People at my work have been reading these sitting-will-kill you articles, and in the last week, at least two people have had their offices reconfigured so they have standing desks.
posted by rtha at 9:15 AM on May 13, 2011

Yeah, I'd read something to this effect online not too long ago. Regardless of its veracity, in the 21st century, we really do spend too much time sitting. Just reading that reminded me that as much as I heart Le Interwebs, I should be reducing the amount of time I spend on it. (FWIW, I am very active physically, but still have a tendency to sucked into MeFi or something else for long periods of time in between.)

I am doing more standing now, but not for health reasons. It's because this ass was meant to be seen.

I started using a standing desk about a month ago and intend to continue until the end of time.

Or the end of me, whichever comes first.

A week into the experiment, though, my back went out in a big and painful way. As far as I can tell, spending the week engaging muscles that were accustomed to lying dormant throughout the day was a little more strenuous than I had expected. Still, I'm on the mend now and happily standing at work.

Although it would be great to have a bona fide standing desk, my budget allowed for nothing more than pilfering some bankers' boxes and setting my laptop, keyboard and second monitor up on them. So it doesn't have to cost a whole lot.
