Has letterpress jumped the shark?

With the recent rise in interest in traditional printing techniques, from the birth of many new studios to at least one movie in the works, perhaps it is inevitable that something like Apple iPhoto letterpress cards happened.

Does the development of 'iLetterpress' and the ability to get letterpress stationery from big companies like Costco mean that 'tradtional style' letterpress, with its time and cost factors, is doomed to recede once again?

This post was deleted for the following reason: The actual links here seem pretty meh, not sure exactly what's supposed to be the interesting core of this post. Maybe rework and try again tomorrow if there's something substantial that got lost in the presentation? -- cortex

I've always hoped to dress up my Comic Sans formal invitations with some letterpress action.

There have been services on the internet to sell photo prints forever. What's so special about this apple product that it needs an FPP?

I'm pretty sure Apple invented music too.

It's Apple, and they need all the free advertising they can get.

FWIW, today's "letterpress" is actually done using polymer plates, designed entirely digitally. You're damned lucky to come across anyone doing letterpress exclusively with metal or wood type.

(sigh) Your slight phrasing hiccup has doomed this thread to people picking on Apple by making up nonsense and claiming Apple claims things they don't. And then Blazecock Pileon will come in and correctly but dickishly argue back, and mayhem's gonna happen.

So... oh well. I wanted to hear more about letterpress, but that won't be happening today. I'll be at my Kindle if you need me.

I would like everyone to know I have recently come into possession of paper, scissors, an awl and a hole punch and will be taking orders for special *handmade* letterpress cards tomorrow.

I have been advertised at and will be seeing this movie and purchasing Apple and Costco letterpress products immediately.

(I mean, does "letterpress" just mean "printed?")

There's a lot of cute letterpress notecards (and a lot of pretty ugly letterpress notecards) on Etsy. I've noticed knock-offs at Target, so I think it is hitting the mainstream. I assume that like most trends, this will get less trendy at some point, but I can't predict when that will happen.

I'm psyched that this Kickstarter for a virtual letterpress iPad app made more than double its goal.

Yeah, just printed using a traditional printing press, apparently.

For one of my senior BFA projects, I produced an edition of 20 12x12 inch books of relief prints and metal type... What an epic undertaking THAT was... holy cow. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. It was worth it though!
