Powerglove, a speed metal / 'tv show and video game' band, has released an official video to their cover of the Danny Elfman theme from Batman.
Their other covers include: X-Men, The Animated Series (see it mixed to the intro) / Transformers / Flintstones / Simpsons / Inspector Gadget / Power Rangers / Pokemon: Gotta Catch Them All (Live) / The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest / Nightmare before Christmas: This is Halloween / Mario Minor / Legend of Zelda: Power, Wisdom, Courage / Metal Kombat for the Mortal Man / Heffalumps and Woozles and: Tetris (Live)
The band's youtube channel includes instructions on how to create a Guitar Hero Synth Controller and their North American Tour Diary includes footage from some of their live performances.

As awesome as this band is (and that's "very"), I can't figure out why they covered a song from Guilty Gear, given that it's already a power metal soundtrack. Not that it isn't awesome. It just sounds just like the original.

I have a ton of metal loving video game nerd friends who like to one up (pun not planned but I will take it) each other with findings that involve metal or video games or ... anything interesting. We are like our own metafilter and this one is mine. All mine. I will FPP their freakin minds. Why did we not find this sooner?

Speaking of one up...Denver mefites must meet up post haste at the one up bar if this hasn't happened already. If it has then I demand a remeetup post haste. I have fallen out of subsite scope but if you have me in your sniper rifle sight snipe away. The one up sells 40s but they need a shot called "one shot, one kill."

I'm not amazed by their selection - most of these songs, I've heard to death.
I am, however, amazed they got Tony Kakko to sing the Pokemon theme.
(Tony Kakko is the lead singer of popular Finnish power metal band Sonata Arctica, a band who - since their second album - have seen every single one of their albums and singles hit the top 3 of the respective Finnish chart. Getting him to sing vocals on your album is a Big. Fucking. Deal.)

I made it through a couple of them because I'll do silly things like that for anything Transformers. Then I needed something to wash the taste out of my ears.
I don't understand the appeal of speed metal. Sure there's technical skill involved I guess, but I don't see any artistry in it.

Speaking of the powerglove being so bad, HORSE the Band is an essential to any classic nintendo inspired music collection. They led me to Powerglove (who are awesome, great post!), and also have the greatest pizza based concept album of all time.

I'll also say I first heard them on /mu/ in early October. /mu/ is consistently an awesome source for new music. The /mu/ essentials blog is also great (I would link to the sharethreads archives as well, but I don't think that would be allowed, PM if you want the link).

Perhaps the best way to explain this is that there's no less artistry involved than there is in any other form of pop, verse-chorus music (which can still be a considerable amount of artistry). If you're looking for the "why" of why some people like their pop songs delivered with a reedy voice and acoustic guitar strumming, and some people like them with electronica and programmed drums, and some people like them with distortion, sixteenth notes, and wailing vocals, then good luck finding it. When it comes to tone and timbre, tastes simply vary.

I'm a big fan of Nouvelle Vague, who records 80s new wave tunes in a bossa nova style (previously on meFi). When they covered Bella Lugosi's Dead (possibly the only New Wave song ever recorded with a bossa nova beat), Nouvelle Vague chose a straight four-four beat.
I only bring this up because Powerglove makes everything sound like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I can only hope they someday cover that game's theme in an 8-bit style.

This is one of those things where it feels like this has been done before, but I can't exactly remember when it has been done quite so amazingly well. The Pokémon and Heffalumps and Woozles covers are especially fine.
I wanted these covers to be much better than they are.
They already are much better than they are. That's just how metal they are.

The Advantage is a similar band except not speed metal and they only play songs from NES games. A couple personal favorites are:
Bubble Bobble (wait till shark skeleton kicks in, so awesome)
Duck Tails: Moon Stage (here it is live)
I saw them live at a club with a small crowd which consisted mostly of late twenty/early thirty somethings shouting out NES game names. Good nerdy fun.

I've seen Powerglove many times and they are a fun band to watch. Not nearly as fun as The Protomen though.

Saw Dragonforce, Powerglove, Turisas in 2008ish. I hate to say it, Turisas stole the show. But Powerglove wasn't so bad.
