Sisterhood vs. Mean Girls

At the Emmy Awards ceremony Sunday night, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Melissa McCarthy, Martha Plimpton, Edie Falco and Laura Linney pulled off a brilliant comedic bit: the mock beauty pageant. While a sendup, there's little doubt that the good will among the nominees on stage was genuine. (As was Melissa McCarthy's reaction to winning for Best Actress.) At the Charlie Sheen roast Monday night, two women, actress Kate Walsh and comic Amy Schumer were among the roasters. Also performing was Schumer's boyfriend Anthony Jeselnik; which provided the opening for this zinger from Kate Walsh: "And Anthony? That embarrassing nasty parasite on your penis is Amy Schumer. And there is no cure.” As we see more and more women writing and performing their own comedic material, can we anticipate more Sisterhood or more Mean Girls?

We can expect both. And then some. Because hey, we don't fit into neat little boxes like that.

I don't understand what one thing has to do with the other. One was an awards ceremony. The other was a roast. And women comedians aren't new.

Well, she does anyway, but the rest of us...

It's a roast. The point is to insult everyone in the room. Citing it as an example or a trend or anything other than comedians bringing out the big guns is akin to saying that football players must all hate each other, because they're always tackling and hitting.

Was that actually a comedic bit? Or did I just get suckered into watching 5 boring minutes of the Emmys?

Surprise surprise, women contain multitudes, just like men. We can be funny and show our love for each other, we can be funny and viciously mean. Just like, you know, regular funny man-people.

People like a good cat fight whether it's true or not, so even if it is Sisterhood it will be portrayed as Mean Girls.

Eek. Sorry for hamfisted typing.

Women have been doing this since the beginning of time. They're just getting on tv more doing standup.

You'll see more of both.

I'm just hoping we'll see more funny. Because those ladies are hilarious.

But in a relevant aside, the self styled "Queen Of Mean" Lisa Lampanelli gave a thoughtful, interesting and endearing interview on WTF this week.

Who is the guy freaking out and looking disgusted at Tina Fey kissing his cheek? Anybody know? That was pretty weird...

So, women can only relate to each other in two ways: as sisters (with or without traveling pants) or catty, immature high school "girls" (note the diminution implicit in calling adult women "girls")? Good to know.

I didn't realize Maron interviewed her twice.

Yup, Jack McBrayer's reaction to Tina Fey kissing him was awesome. I'm still not sure if that bit on stage was actually fully planned or not, a few of the women involved seemed to not be in on the joke at first.

But yeah - anybody calling Kate Walsh's zinger "mean girls" clearly doesn't understand how a roast works.
