A Complete Guide to "Hipster Racism." (single link Jezebel by Lindy West)
posted by changeling (15 comments total)

This post was deleted for the following reason: single link jezebel clickbait. This could maybe be part of a more inspired post about racism and racial issues, but this one isn't it. Sorry. -- jessamyn

People benefit from racism—hell, I benefit from it every day

So, exactly how many writers of color work for the Gawker empire? And is working there a benefit or a liability?

Whatever else there may be to quarrel about in this article (and I'm sure other commenters here will find it), I praise it with great praise for Point 4 alone.

This is good:

Race is one of the least complicated issues that there is, because it's made up. It's arbitrary. It's as complicated as goddamn Santa Claus.

Just want to jump in on the ground floor here before anyone gets too mad: those of us in Seattle know Ms. West from her work at The Stranger, and as her recent online writing has borne out, she is entirely insufferable on any subject she cares to take on; it's kind of her thing, and her persona is tailor-made for online rock-stardom in the Gawker universe of outrageous link-bait. Shine on you crazy diamond!

Dodai Stewart is an editor there. So, that's one.

Whatever. I was reading John Derbyshire before it was cool.

Wow. Poison the well much, chaff? I mean for all I know it's true or something, but jeez, talk about being in before the actual examination of the argument before us....

It's the made up things that are the most complicated, not the least.

Asher Roth and post-ironic hipster racism by Jay Smooth (Of previous Mefi fame) covers the same issues but better.

benito.strauss: It's the made up things that are the most complicated, not the least.

From the same paragraph, just a few sentences later:

What's actually complicated is our country's relationship with race, and our utter ineptitude at talking about it.

This post goes hand-in-hand with that AV Club article post that got all that guff yesterday. Let's all remember to at least read the article before commenting.

It's all tied up with the deliberately obtuse people who conflate "freedom of speech" with "immunity from criticism." You "can" say the n-word. Go ahead and say it if you want, Skrillex. And I will go ahead and give you the world's most sidewaysiest eyeball forever. Because it hurts people. Why do you want to hurt people?

God, thank you. I've seen this trend over and over again with edgy, "I'm what you call un-PC" in-your-face idiots - "freedom of speech" only applies when it's them being an asshole; your freedom of speech to call them assholes is "censorship".

I thought the article was excellent and I would like to see rebuttals with more substance than "this sux amirite".
