Driving through Guoliang Tunnel on YouTube. Basically, it's an Indiana Jones sequence waiting to happen.

I've got to pick the Ukraine tunnel of trees for sheer beauty, but that Guoliang tunnel? That thing is amazing, and those rough-cut windows just add to it's awesomeness.

The magnificent tunnel road in the Taihang mountains was built by 13 local villagers headed by their chief, Shen Mingxin, and took around five years to finish.

I think this sort of undersells it. As I understand it, the village was at the top of a nigh-inaccessible mountain, and one day the villagers just said "fuck climbing up and down that horrible ladder every time we need to go anywhere. Let's get some hammers and drills!" And then they slowly, slowly made a mile-long tunnel through SOLID STONE. At a rate of something like a yard a day, for five years. I mean, shit.

I was just about to quote the same part but I'm pretty sure the simplicity doesn't undersell it at all. That seems pretty fucking impressive. Take my personal output from the last five years and divide it by 13, and you still don't get anything like that tunnel.
