"[I]f past conventions are any indicator, Republicans are likely to outspend Democrats heavily at topless bars and strip clubs..." says Angelina Spencer. She heads the Association of Club Executives, an organization for the nation's 4,000 "gentleman's club" owners. The group talked to members in the host cities of past conventions. "When we compared spending," Spencer notes, "the average showed Republicans spending $150 per person at an adult club, versus Democrats, who averaged $50 a person."

Is every strip club considered a "Gentleman's Club?" Because I'll tell ya, I went to Pudgy's out on Rt. 20 once and it was anything but gentlemanly.

Why was I very surprised that there's only 4,000 gentleman's clubs in the U.S.?

I don't know. That's eighty per state. That's not even accounting for Vegas, which may drive up the average. I'd be willing to bet that the median is closer to forty.

I've driven all over the Mid-Atlantic, through a bunch of the South and across the Appalachians into Indiana for most of the past fifteen years, and that sounds about right to me. The only reason they look so common is that they're frequently located next to major highways. So if you're on the Interstate a lot, you can see plenty of 'em. But the vast majority of municipal areas don't have one.

I mean, my current city has like six--I drove by two on the way to work before I moved; now it's only one--but the nearest one I know of in Indiana but outside Fort Wayne is three counties away. Past that and you need to head to Detroit, Chicago, or Indianapolis. There's nothing in between.* Well, there aren't really any towns either, so this shouldn't be that surprising.

What is kind of surprising, or at least curious, is that Fort Wayne is (1) in a ridiculously Red county, and (2) known as the "city of churches," because there's so many of 'em. Both a Catholic and conservative Lutheran seminary in town, and about two-thirds of the town are one or the other. So yeah. Hugely Republican area, ton of strip clubs for a city of its size. Go figure.

*Fun fact: I know this because the leading Supreme Court case on strip clubs and the First Amendment concerns a club in the town where I went to law school, and we analyzed the case in my State and Local Government Law class. And they say law school is boring.

So there's Republican National Convention, strip clubs, the Scientologists over in Clearwater, and an impending hurricane.

Do they ask people their party affiliation when they walk in the door of a strip club?

This article is pretty weak in terms of content and makes a lot of accusations without any solid statistics.

I gathered that the methodology was to just compare tips on convention weekends to non-convention weekends.

They only ask your party affiliation if you are registering to vote with the strip club as your address.

If that wasn't surreal enough, there's the Dali Museum over in St. Pete!
