"You could wear a T-shirt that says 'I'm literally asking for it,' and I'd still advocate for your security"

An Open Letter to Krista Ford: "You could wear a T-shirt that says 'I'm literally asking for it,' and I'd still advocate for your security". Alice Moran - writer, actor, resident of the city which started Slutwalks and one of the victims of a recent spate of assaults in the West End - responds to another woman who still blames women and their clothing for being sexually assaulted. This post was deleted for the following reason: Someone says something stupid and sexist on Twitter not really so great for a post. I understand that people are upset about this, but we might want to consider what the outcome is that you are hoping for by posting this thread, in this way on this website. Having a whole bunch more consciousness raising about what victim blaming is and why it is bad is not really a great reason for a post. -- jessamyn

I didn't vote for Rob Ford, but I still feel compelled to apologize to the rest of the world on behalf of the citizens of Toronto for giving him and his family a larger place in the media spotlight.

Jesus, T.O., I leave you for a few years and you elect Rob Ford. I clearly need to keep an eye on you.

(But lest I forget the Reason for the Season FPP: WTF Krista Ford? I don't even.)

Satire and parody took another blow today. Seriously, I can't parse that last story.

It seems like Krista Ford did mean well, but her execution was more than lacking.

I'm not one to engage in victim blaming, but I do see how it's easy to do. I was once the victim of a violent crime. To this day I believe I bear some culpability. I was in the wrong neighborhood, walking alone, intoxicated, I engaged the perpetrators and didn't give the deference they believed they were entitled to, etc. I could go on. It is easy to assign a level of blame for a crime. No one wants there to be victims, so if you can say the person was somehow deserving it means you can go about your day knowing that won't happen to you.

I'm not sure why Rob Ford is dragged into this tough. No idea who he was before looking him up, but we all have stupid family members.

I'd like to point out to everyone here that Rob Ford has nothing to do with this situation.

This assault happened in my neighborhood, to someone I know, who I believe has handled it all as well as humanly possible. How bout we leave the "Rob Ford Sux" out of it, not because he doesn't suck (he does) but because he actually has nothing to do with this.

I really don't understand why Krista Ford's opinion on anything warrants such a response as I witnessed in my news feeds this morning. Her two claims to fame are: being a former athlete on a novelty sports time and b) sharing some genes with a mayor and councillor. She is not a public figure. She doesn't have real influence and any cultural influence she has was nothing. (Until this story came out, I guess, because today I know who the hell she is, which I couldn't say yesterday.)

"Someone says something stupid and sexist on Twitter" is not really a headline.

So the original twoot was:

“Stay alert, walk tall, carry mace, take self-defence classes & don’t dress like a whore. #DontBeAVictim #StreetSmart”

The response from a rape victim was:

So, you've called me a whore. Here we are. This is awkward now, isn't it? You're probably wondering if I'm going to challenge you on having been a member of Lingerie League.

I don't know even a single thing about this Ford lady or her father, but I'm just wondering, based on the language alone, whether the response was not over the top? Was the initial message in response to something, an event in particular, that makes it clear she's saying, 'if you get raped, you were probably dressed like a whore'?

I'm honestly asking.

I should state that, if it wasn't in response to a particular event, it seems like she's just giving unsolicited advice, advice from which it does not logically follow that, if you get raped, you were dressing like a slut. Right?

He's not responsible for her idiocy, but seriously, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. See also: that [potentially dead] cyclist would just be asking for it.

Anyway, she's apologized and hopefully she's smartened up.

Krista Ford > Megan McCain
