There are a lot of great Summit tapes from the mid-70s. The Summit had huge screens, and it seems everything that went to the screens was videotaped, so now we have this wonderful cache of amazing documents, some of which are available as boots and many of which have come out officially. This Bootsy set would have been part of the larger P-Funk extravaganza; main Funkadelic set is available on this release, but there are three or four other full shows that circulate as well documenting their most resplendent era in all its glory. There's an excellent Who set from '75 that has also been officially released. And of course KISS played there as well.

Love me some Bootsy. A few years ago I had the pleasure of editing a Domino's Pizza commercial that Bootsy scored. During the edit I asked what exactly he was saying in the second scene. Was it "Check it out, baby" or "Check it out, Mama". Nobody knew, so we called him. He said he was saying "Check it out, Baba". He had just liked the way that sounded.

I find that this got a favorite from haunted by Leonard Cohen very eponlicious in that both artists, Bootsy and Cohen, are both reknown for their own Hallelujahs.
On looking up -- small point, but The Summit is not in the Astrodome, just near it.
Thank you, I appreciate the correction. This was a club or auditorium, then ? I understood it as the Summit in the sense of the concert and that the first three clips are of Bootsy opening his first tour by opening for Parliamen/Funkadelic at a huge concert in the Astrodome. I think I have a yardsale DVD of that I have yet to see in a box somewhere I know not. I recall that I read or, more likely, misread that somewhere, so the conflation is mine. My abject yada yadapologies.

y2karl, the Summit used to be where the Rockets played, and it also hosted arena shows, the circus, and the like.

A friend of mine used to work at Everybody's Records in Cincinnati, and according to him Bootsy used to come in to buy stuff all the time, always in regular street clothes and without the "Bootsy" persona. It took my friend about 3-4 encounters at the record shop before he realized that he'd been helping Bootsy Collins.

I'd forgotten how weird that whole thing was. The right combination of drugs and history, maybe could explain it. George Clinton & Bootsy, before the Whitehouse turned black. Swing down sweet chariot and we've got the funk and they tore the roof off the mothersucker! Damn. Some funky weird shit there!
One time I was backstage after Sun Ra played, and one of the musicians asked me where the toilet was, and I told him to go down the hall and take the door to the right. I swear to God that he went in there and transported to somewhere else, because he never came out. Swear to God!

You know that's not really fair. Bootsy is great, but don't put him up in a post with James Brown, because that's a whole other level there, like Fela or something.

As a performer, his charisma is enormous, but in interviews he comes across as so wholesome, humble, articulate and approachable, seemingly with not a mean bone in his body nor any pretension in his manner. It is impossible not to like him, from the git go...
