Kimani Gray

Last night marked the third night of riots in a Brooklyn neighborhood where sixteen year old Kimai Gray was shot seven times on Saturday night by NYPD officers who say he had pointed a gun at them, a contested claim.

The recent protests come just a year after an unarmed 23-year-old woman, Shantel Davis, was shot and killed by an NYPD’s narcotics detective in the same neighborhood, according to the Times report.

This post was deleted for the following reason: metafilter is not newsfilter. This is a terrible thing that has happened but this post is just pointing to a cops/guns suck amirite discussion which is 1) not that interesting 2) done to death. Feel free to try again with a different spin on this if you'd like to. -- jessamyn

Any stats how many black people are killed by the NYPD each year?

Does this count as an argument for or against gun control? It's hard to keep track sometimes.

Foci, I found stats for last year: 21 killed by NYPD in 2012, almost 90% of whom were black or hispanic.

21 is far fewer than I expected, to be honest.

Neither.

It might be an argument for cop control

Can a mod fix the typo in the post? The victim's name is correctly spelled in the post title.

I think the right answer to this is "too many".

rt.com also has some photos and coverage of the protests.

One eyewitness isn't particularly compelling.

I think it counts as something that deserves more than a snarky gun-control comment.

7 times? This feels like a good time to be reminded that German police fired a total of 85 bullets against people in all of 2011.

And Germany isn't exactly a racial utopia.

Oops, sorry for the typo. Missed a letter there. His name was Kimani.
