Safe kids?

If your child attends public school in St. Mary's County, Maryland, you have probably been advised of new rules in the wake of the Newtown tragedy.

The new rules include banning hugs and homemade birthday treats, prohibiting visits during the school day by younger siblings and a ban on handing out birthday party invitations.

Additionally, only registered volunteers are allowed on playgrounds. And even then, they are not to play with children other than their own, including pushing on swings.

This post was deleted for the following reason: I feel like "local schools make some dumb rules" is awfully thin for news on on the front page, especially with the "in the wake of Newton" framing when e.g. the birthday treats thing is about food allergies. -- cortex

If you can't ban assault rifles, ban hugs?

Hilariously appropriate for the land of the free.

That headline reads like something I'd expect to see from The Onion.

Look at the crazy lengths our society goes to to keep the guns flowing.

It's like an addiction.

Homemade treat bans have got to be pretty common at this point - the food allergy thing is a big, big deal and I've heard of such bans before. And visits during the school day, by siblings, by anyone really, I can't say I'm terribly outraged about such a restriction - where do these kids go to school that they can have visitors during the day?

The no hugs thing? Yeah, what MartinWisse said.

These rules are not actually all in response to the shooting and related security concerns. The "no homemade treats" rule for instance, isn't about violence. It's about allergies. Store bought treats have ingredients lists, which makes it easier for teachers to monitor for allergens.

On preview: Yeah, like IvoShandor said.

However, as a friend pointed out to me, bringing in pre-packaged treats is often just as bad for children with allergies. If you want to include a child with food allergies, you need to accommodate them separately most of the time.
