Paula Deen abruptly shuts down restaurant, forgets to tell employees Uncle Bubba's Seafood and Oyster House — the home of Paula Deen's 2013 racism scandal — has closed its doors, and employees of the restaurant were the very last to know

Some long-term employees were shocked to discover they no longer had a job and turned to the restaurant’s Facebook page to vent.

“I’ve been water works all a.m.,” wrote one poster who said she’d been employed there for seven years. “I’ve worked there since I was 16. I woke up this a.m. to no job and no forewarning.”

Perhaps the displaced employees can find new jobs at Dollywood.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Getting laid off sucks and without warning doubly so, but this seems like sort of a "normal crappy thing happened but also there's a celebrity angle" deal, not something that seems like it's got a lot of value as a mefi post. -- cortex

Could be worse. She could have sold them without telling them.

To be fair, they did tell the black and white employees at the same time.

In Hiers’ deposition in 2013 he testified that he frequently viewed pornography on company-owned sites at work and had a history of cocaine use and alcohol abuse. He admitted taking money from the restaurant in 2010 — allegedly as much as $25,000 to $30,000 a month, a practice Deen eventually discovered. He said his sister was in control of the business but it was never a big moneymaker.

“The company had never shown a lot of profit,” Hiers testified.

Gee, I wonder why?

Shutting down without telling your employees is a dick move for sure, but Deen wouldn't be the first business owner to do it.

That place is just a couple miles from where I grew up and I've eaten there a handful of times. Only one occasion sticks out, and it was because we went with my grandma who would not stop laughing at our waiter who was gay.

I see that I have nothing of value to add to this conversation, except to say that I liked that place before Paula Deen owned it. It was some other restaurant, something that started with an S? I think? Snappers maybe? I can't remember. They had lots of marlins on the walls and had a nature walk dock out back. Sometimes there were gators. That was fun.

But you can tell she's a good person by the way she smiles all the time and feeds everyone sugary, buttery foods. She clearly cares.

It's not like the restaurant closed and they're owed money. They're even getting severance checks. Why is this even on Metafilter. Oh right, famous person said something bad 30 years ago and we haven't talked about it in awhile.

So, I mean, isn't it just another version of Cracker Barrel, maybe with more butter/lard or whatever?

I still can't help but laugh at the name of Cracker Barrel, I mean, my god, can you get more descriptive of the clientele?
