"It's like FOR FUCK'S SAKE! Could we just have ONE place where we don't get all rapey? Could that place be, I don't know, the fucking cranial nerves!?": Um, there's some rape culture in my neuroanatomy. [trigger warning]

This post was deleted for the following reason: I do dig the rant for rants' sake, but as a short personal rant about a gross mnemonic they remember from school this is pretty thin for a post. -- cortex

Ugh, I remember being taught in ninth grade a gross, rapey mnemonic for resistor color codes in our Intro to Engineering Class. Shit pops up everywhere and, just, ugh.

Seriously -- in my undergrad electronics class I feel like I have to specifically disavow any resistor color mnemonics they might find online. They're either misogynist, or racist, or both. (One of the "both" variants was written on the chalkboard more-or-less permanently in the electrical engineering lab I took my first classes in. Hopefully times have changed, or at least I'm trying to do my part to change them in my tiny corner of the teaching world.)

I am suddenly so very grateful to my high school anatomy teacher for coming up with his own set of mnemonics for the 12 cranial nerves that were incredibly goofy and not at all offensive. (Three -> tree -> picture an engine in a tree with a big eye on top (seriously) -> oculumotor! Weird enough to stick for 25 years, hey?). I had no idea horrible things like this were out there until today. Gah.

I assume I learned the same racist and misogynistic resistor mnemonic as range. And it's pretty damn racist and misogynistic.

Ugh.
