RIP Ornette Coleman, avant-garde legend and pioneer of free jazz. He introduced an entirely new vocabulary that broke from jazz's harmonic and formal conventions, initially confounding audiences and critics before being recognized as a true innovator. He was still performing as recently as last year. Highlights include The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959) and Change of the Century (1960).
