Why are you a buddhist?

“Buddhist” in Berkeley means the same thing as “Christian” in Foley. Most Foley Christians may be ignorant of basic Christian doctrines, and rarely if ever go to church, but that’s not the point. Most Berkeley Buddhists may be ignorant of basic Buddhist doctrines, and rarely if ever go to a meditation group, but that’s not the point. That’s not what Buddhism is for. It’s a way of saying what sort of person you are. At least, that’s one thing it is for!

A post about Buddhism that is not just about buddhism. How can we create a Buddhism (or any other -ism ) that actually contributes something and does not become empty? what kind of signals add value and what kind of community is a healthy community?

This post was deleted for the following reason: This is both editorially framed and pretty insulting, it seems, which doesn't seem likely to lead to a good discussion. -- LobsterMitten
