How to Culture Jam a Populist in Four Easy Steps

There’s no point sugar coating: the road ahead is tough and the pitfalls are many. "But if you want to be part of the solution, the road ahead is clear: Recognize you’re the enemy they need; show concern, not contempt, for the wounds of those that brought Trump to power; by all means be patient with democracy and struggle relentlessly to free yourself from the shackles of the caricature the populists have drawn of you. It’s a tall order. But the alternative is worse. Believe me, I know: I’m from Venezuela."

"Your challenge is to prove to them that you belong to the same tribe they do."

What in the actual FUCK is this nonsense. Venezuela is not the US; different culture, different history. And trying to prove to racists and misogynists and homophobes that we're actually part of their tribe has never once worked. Never. Every single right nonwhite males have was fought for. And I am getting damn tired of being told that if only we're nicer about asking for equal rights, maybe we'll get them.

The wound here wasn't economic. It's about loss of privilege. Privilege, meaning private law, meaning an exalted place above others.

This entire article is so far one long tone argument that misses the point rather spectacularly.
