A link between cholesterol, inflammation and liver cancer

Scientists at the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) have discovered a new connection between cholesterol, inflammation and liver cancer after confirming the essential role of c-Fos protein in the appearance of liver carcinomas, specifically in the transformation of Premalignant hepatocytes by altering cholesterol homeostasis and favoring their accumulation. The results of this study, published in The Journal of Experimental Medicine, suggest that maintaining healthy cholesterol levels may be important in preventing liver cancer. "Understanding the mechanisms responsible for the early stages of cancer formation is the key piece in identifying biomarkers and developing preventive therapies," the authors explain.
