This was one of the big winners of the Information is Beautiful awards for 2018. It's lovely. I wish they were more specific about the cell layout algorithm; the details are quite complex and organic.

Their paper from the IEEE VIS 2018 Arts Program has a reasonable amount of detail (they have a link to this at the very bottom of the page).
