Oh, come on! I've seen a frozen naked wooly mammoth statue before

These are great and I've never heard of any of these artists before. Thanks!

(I'd personally recommend not reading the text that accompanies Tsibizova's great images in the 4th link. It made me cringe a bit as a spectator. But, it's a very minor nitpick about a great post.)

But if I had not read her comments, I might never heard of Siberian gazelles. I had no idea that such existed.

Happy People/A Year in the Taiga | Winter (part 4) if you haven't seen this already.

(And not to be confused with the condensed cut of all four seasons that Werner Herzog made after purchasing the rights to the film.)

Wait, what? Really?

Hunh. I guess I know what's going on my YT playlist for the weekend.

And these are great images, especially the first link, thanks for posting, mandolin conspiracy.

(He says, grumbling under his breath that if it's gonna be this cold in Cleveland (20 degrees F) I want some goddamn snow to go along with it otherwise what's the point?)

Yes. Herzog made the trappers the focus of the film and cut out almost everything about life in the village. Also much of the v/o narration was written by the filmmaker with Herzog simply re-recording it.

All four original parts (one for each season, starting with spring) are on youtube.

I am pretty sure there's a 'previously' for the film but I'm too lazy to find it right now.

These are fabulous! Looking forward to spending more time with them, and feeling warm.

My only connection to Siberia is sharing a house with a Siberian cat, who fears and hates snow no matter what I tell him about his heritage.

Also -- does NSFW not mean what I think it means? I scrolled through looking for frigid nudity and I was tragically disappointed. "New Siberian Foto Work", perhaps?

Not always Siberia, but check out Arseniy Kotov (northern.friend on instagram). He spent a little time in Vorkuta and surroundings (a place I can't believe I've actually been!) as parts were about to finally officially be abandoned early last year.

Oh wow, msbrauer, those are some great photos.

And it reminded me that I came across this collection of Vorkuta photography a while back, also via the Calvert Journal.
