Ha! I love this version! He does great covers. I like how he did this one in NZ, he did INXS and BeeGees covers in Australia. (I love the song in general. In the original, I love how her voice carries the melody. Everything else is rhythm.)

...and then there's SHOUT in Glasgow, yet another of my long list of favorites.

Thank you for posting! Have a fabulous day everyone!

Previously on Metafilter.

I’m not complaining. It’s very good cover and worth another listen. I just was trying to think of where I first came across this, and then it hit me.

Mod note: OP self-flagged, but It's been a while, and some people haven't seen it, so I think we can go with this!

Love that!! So good. The vibe of working class-ness that Lorde wrote about comes ready-made for a Springsteen take. When you can say that a song seems like it could/should have been written by Bruce... what more can you say? She certainly did not mind.

Lorde praised Springsteen and discussed her reaction to watching the cover version online, “My Twitter went mental. Everyone in New Zealand was like ‘You can’t believe what just happened!’ It was so exciting. It was the highest honor. He’s such an incredible songwriter. I got a little teary. It was very cool... Those words were nothing before I put them into my laptop and started messing around with them in the studio. It’s crazy to me they could come out of someone’s mouth who is that respected.””

His smile at “next big thing” is an absolute fucking delight.

What a great version of this song.

King B, maybe, not King Bee?

Bruce Springsteen does this a lot, finding a local artist or group to cover when playing in a certain place. It's always great to see the audience respond once they realise who he's covering.

It's a much fancier venue and occasion, but this is exactly what I thought when Bruce covered Sting's song I Hung My Head when Sting got a Kennedy Center honor. It's like what Bob Dylan was supposed to have said when he heard Hendrix's cover of "All Along The Watchtower" - "oh, okay, that's what it was supposed to sound like."

If you had asked me how old this song was before I came across this post, I would have said 3-4 years. But released 2013? Apparently my Dorsolateral prefrontal right cortex is broken.

(The cover is good!)

The Bruce cover I want most is Fleet Foxes' Mykonos. It's kind of halfway there already.

King B, maybe, not King Bee?

Oh! Yeah, that makes sense. It's a great cover but I kept thinking, "King bees aren't really a thing, Bruce."

I love Bruce Springsteen. That is all.

[Like Lorde, too. And it's worth watching the "previously" version which is from a different show and clearly a fan recording and there's a sudden rush of buzzy excitement at around 1:10 when the stadium full of people fully realizes Bruce is singing local pop idol Lorde's hit...]

Other Boss covers of note:

"It's time to see if you can Stump the E-Street Band!" (audience requests)

Burning Love
Satisfaction
Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, Tennessee

I dare you to try not to get weepy during Satisfaction.

corpse in the library, Ursula Hitler - it is likely a hat-tip to "I'm A King Bee" -the blues song by Slim Harpo; most well-known cover is likely by the Stones, but also, Muddy Waters.

Absolutely loved this cover - good lord who couldn't? But, relating to the post/playlist above, it didn't literally give me frisson like this one did

Springsteen doing a You Never Can Tell (Chuck Berry) cover in Germany. Has he always done site specific covers like this before 2013?

It tells me they mess around a lot while rehearsing to be able to play songs on the spot like this, without missing lyrics. Another one I remember is Fats doing I Hear you Knocking when requested, but that is such a NOLA song.

Has Bruce ever done a cover of a Hold Steady song? That seems like such an obvious choice but I can’t tell if it’s ever happened.

When I Leave Berlin” - a fairly obscure but still awesome 70s folk song, played in of course Berlin.
