Infiltrating Trump's MAGAverse with Jordan Klepper & Desi Lydic

Roy Wood, Jr. rounds up a couple of earlier Daily Show podcast episodes with Jordan Klepper and Desi Lydic [48m] (and some producers and other guests) talking about their work going into, um, difficult situations for news and comedy. It's an interesting look at what goes into that particular style that they do.

Jordan Klepper is so calm, so polite and oh so quick on his feet. He is a master at what he does.

A comedian's job should never be dangerous. They hate it so much. You tell them facts and it's a personal attack. It wounds their ego to be told the truth. It's because their opinions are based on feelings, so you've just hurt their feelings. It's been noted before, but these are the biggest fucking snowflakes in the world, and the hypocrisy is lost on them.

And it is fucking funny. Watch someone become red-faced with outrage at the concept of white fragility, proving its reality with an oblivious demonstration. That's funny.

But this should not be a dangerous job. Again with the hypocrisy: they can't stand free speech when they're confronted with it.

The most appalling part is when they try to be funny, it's cruel. Hillary getting raped is the punchline, GEDDIT??? 'Owning the libs for the lulz' often means laughing at people suffering. It's pretty sick and sad. When you stop seeing the humanity in others, and lose empathy, you lose your own humanity.

Once you lose your humanity, you can do terrible things and laugh.

Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.

My teenage daughter loves laughing at these clips, and so do I, but I still feel like I have to try to hide the stomach churn that runs underneath: these are real people, who really believe this hateful garbage. I know she knows this intellectually, but (maybe thankfully) doesn’t yet share the raw fear it carries.

Jordan Klepper is so calm, so polite and oh so quick on his feet. He is a master at what he does.

I've long admired Klepper for his exceptional ability to do what he does, and as someone who is neither quick on her feet nor good at dealing with bigots, I've also tried to analyze it to figure out how he does it. Boiled down, I'd say that what he does is make sure he's informed himself about the issues at stake, and then he asks people straightforward, matter-of-fact questions (which they are usually very happy to answer) until he's led them by small, logical steps to the point where they realize they can't defend what they thought they believed. That bemused look on their faces when they go quiet and *almost* get it is always so hilarious.

My takeaway from this is when dealing with MAGA types the best approach is:

-- make sure *you* know what you're talking about
-- instead of telling people they're wrong or lecturing them, ask people questions until they see the inconsistencies for themselves
-- keep the exchange civil and relatively short

> The most appalling part is when they try to be funny, it's cruel.

The conservative's sense of humor is the same as the bully's. Their idea of a punchline is a weaker person getting punched, while the strong laughs and laughs and laughs.

.... ask people questions until they see the inconsistencies for themselves

The problem is that this doesn't happen. They can't recognize cognitive dissonance. They're oblivious.

I've also tried to analyze it to figure out how he does it.

Pretty sure this is the interview where he describes his planning process for the field interviews with the camera guys and security

Also...they are only showing you the times this approach produces gold...they aren't showing all the failures or worse the footage that is boring.

I had to nope out of this interview around the 10 minute mark after watching people screaming at Klepper on camera for several minutes. My anxiety levels are already through the roof, and as much as I appreciate what he’s doing, I just can’t find any humor in it anymore.

I can't help thinking a good part of what makes him successful at this is that he's clearly a big guy capable of defending himself.

A smaller, weaker person I think would likely provoke a more violent answer from these clowns.

Yes, I've found myself thinking that. Being a 6'3" white straight male makes him far less likely to be attacked.

It's still dangerous for him and his team to be doing what he's doing, and they deserve credit for their fortitude. His cameraman was attacked outside the Capitol buildings on January 6th (Klepper and his team left soon after as it was getting too dangerous for them to be there), and Klepper was quick to jump in and try to protect him.
