After realizing I had only heard and own three off the Rolling Stone list, I decided to cut my losses and not do the same depressing exercise with the others. I readily admit I just cannot keep up with music and laud you folks who do! (My husband is one of these people and without him, I don't think I'd hear much current music.)

I'm a bit of music junkie and this year has been the worst in terms of lists containing, at most, 1-3 albums I recognize. While it's nice to find a bunch of new tunes, I'm definitely feeling a tad out of touch as I inch closer to 40 years old.

Edit: even the extreme metal lists, which concern my primary genre of focus.

On the RS list, I've listened to Mitski, Angel Olsen, King Princess, Pusha T, Taylor Swift... I might be missing something. That list was published before SZA's SOS was released, which is a bummer.

A few thoughts on the Rolling Stone list:
Wilco at #41 is basically objectively correct (saying this as a long-time Wilco fan).
The Beths are a New Zealand band playing indie-guitar pop. They're worth a listen.
Wet Leg are probably the album of the year, at least in the indie-rock/pop space.
Fontaines DC also worth a listen for punk/post-punk fans.
Big Thief are way too low, that album is fantastic.
There's a few artists I like where I'm not seeing the love for their latest albums (Kendrick, Alvvays).
Way too much here that I don't recognise. Some artists I like but didn't even realise they had albums out (Kurt Vile, Pusha T).

Yep. Same here. I'd heard of about 13 of the Rolling Stone list 100 bands. And Kerrang used to be a Metal magazine. I can't even tell what type of music they cover now.

The lists would be interesting if most of the bands didn't look so crappy.

I'm definitely feeling a tad out of touch as I inch closer to 40 years old.

I'm fifty-eight, have heard one album on the list, have heard of maybe five, have heard of maybe ten of the artists. You get used to it. It's fine. There are at least ten albums that came out this year that I like a lot, five of those I'll be listening to for years to come, and that seems like a pretty good year. It's just that they don't end up on lists like this (except that one, I guess).

Oh, you sweet summer child...

Time gets us all eventually, but I'm still the guy scouring the Metal Archives releases list for new stuff. I figured this feeling was at least 5-10 years away! I easily listen to a hundred albums a year.

It seems that as I get older, my age becomes a number that is inversely proportional to the number of names I recognize on these lists.

I don't tend to have the same issue with the "top X of the decade" lists. So that made me start to wonder if somebody out there has compiled a cross reference of the annual "top X" album lists and then compares them them to the "top 100 of the Decade/Century/whatever" lists that are published by the same site. I'd be curious to see how many of the annual top 10 albums don't age well enough to make it to the longer term rollup lists, of if it is just a case that the really good stuff tends to have more of a slow burn effect where it gets better with each listen.

One more to add to the pile: The KEXP DJ's list: https://www.kexp.org/read/2022/12/8/kexp-djs-top-albums-of-2022/

Too much, man.

I like to pick one album and listen to it all year. This year, it was "Promises" by Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra. It came out last year, actually.

I metaphorically wore the the grooves out of Wet Leg this year, so I was glad to see it at the top of the KEXP list (one of the few lists i'm likely to pay attention to).
I'm 59 and just no longer have the time to really take deep dives into new music the way I might have, but I do enjoy Pandora because I can enter a band like Wet Leg and be turned on to new music by the YYY's, the Beth's, the Linda Lindas and a bunch of other lady punkers that I might never have found otherwise.
Also, the Youtube algorithm has provided me with countless hours of original ska, rocksteady and dubstep, Japanese math/postrock and obscure psychedelic and prog rock.
I've had a great year exploring awesome new to me music while only hearing of maybe a third of the bands on these lists.

The KCRW DJs tied Kendrick Lamar and Wet Leg at #1 for their 22 best albums of 2022, but their later inclusions of Stromae's Multitude, Thee Sacred Souls, and the honorable mention of all five free SAULT albums really elevates the list for me. They've got a ton of other fun lists too, including the top 30 most played songs arranged alphabetically if you want smaller bites.

11? Is that good? I don't even know. I'm 48 so probably? I've heard songs from around 20 or them.
The KEXP list just reminded me there's a Phoenix and a Bjork and a Sudan Archives to listen to and I need to stop listening to Wet Leg and Khruangbin all the time.

I guess I hit "that" age.

I recognized the names of only 13 of the artists in this list. I do not own a single song, let alone album on this list. That's depressing, considering I own upwards of a thousand LPs and CDs, and have been an active music listener for my entire life...how sad.

Guess I'd better get a stick and chase the kids off my lawn now.

I generally have a couple of hours most mornings where I can listen to music so if I read a positive review of something I'll give it a listen or just check the new albums section on my music app and see if there's something new from an act I know. I don't give the albums a lot of time to grow on my though so if after 1-2 listens it doesn't stick I'm on to the next one or just whatever playlist the algorithm feeds me. I also have about 45 minutes on my commute home when I listen to music but I'm on my bicycle then so it's strictly stuff that I like and that's at a fast tempo or is high energy to help push my home faster. I only listed to a dozen of the albums on the Rolling Stone List but got about half of the Mojo one.

I downloaded the Wet Leg album and I listened to it but the only two songs I can remember off of it are Chaise Longue and Wet Dream. It was a fun album but I wouldn't put it as my top of the year. My top album of the year would be This is a Photograph by Kevin Morby but Crawler by Idles came out in November 2021 and would easily be my pick if it had come out a couple of months later. I've apparently streamed about 560 hours of music this year and 50 hours of that was Idles. Not all Crawler, but a big chunk for sure.

I really don't have the brain capacity or time to sort through a lot of new music these days, which I admit is unfortunate. I'm sure that tons of great music was released this year. Someone here mentioned Wet Leg in the spring, and I actually listened to them. I'm so glad I did. I'm generally allergic to earnest music (this may be personal failing), and Wet Leg managed to hit the sweet spot between ridiculous, sardonic, sarcastic, yet often sincere that really appeals to me. I like their sense of humor and the fact they're generally not taking themselves seriously, which is really evident in their videos. The production is pretty impressive, too.

I don't do albums, but my favorite songs:

Hippo Campus - Bad Dream Baby dead pets and comments on Britney Spears. LOL.

Sam Fender - 17 Going Under I've heard other songs on the album, and they didn't grip me, but this one does.

Mitski - Should've Been Me I thought their last album was kind of boring, but this song is great. If you like Wet Leg, it's in the same vein.

Charles Wesley Godwin - Strong alt-country, basic tune about perseverance, which is my game, so it works for me.
Elvis Costello - Magnificent Hurt IMO, Elvis' best since he broke up the band.
Andrew Bird - Make a Picture I really love the melody.
Phoenix - Let's Roll I've always liked Phoenix, even though I think they, like KISS, lean to hard on repeating choruses to end songs, but this one is pretty smooth.

IMO, of the returners (Sting, Tears for Fears, Elvis) Tears for Fears was the worst, so they wouldn't make any top lists. Wilco's new song was pleasant, but not really tops. The Weeknd was fine too, and Kendrick Lamar has continued to be solid.

If I've heard more of the rest of the tops, I don't recall them.

Favourite albums of the year for me in no particular order.

Dry Cleaning - Stumpwork
Taylor Swift - Midnights
Time Wharp - Spiro World
Carla Dal Forno - Come Around
Daniel Avery - Ultra Truth
Makaya McCraven - In These Times
Tomu DJ - Half Moon Bay
Yumi Zouma - Present Tense
Hatchie - Giving the World Away

I think the tenth is either The 1975's Being Funny in a Foreign Language (strong singles, the rest has grown on me) or Pleasure Pool's great debut Love Without Illusion (only a fortnight old so too soon to say definitely).

There is always good music around, and TBH using an RSS reader is the best way I think to keep up. Algorithims help but they need new inputs. I've also always used new music as a framing for what to listen to. That's how I cut through the infinite choice personally.

The only knock I have on Danger Mouse / Black Thought is the mixing -- there's a wide disparity between tracks, and sometimes the vocals are a little low. Still, an infectious listen nonetheless.

I wore out #9 (JHope's Jack in the Box) this year. Like obsessively listening to it. I just love where Jhope is going so very much. I also listened to #17 (Megan), #30 (Syd), #37 (The Weeknd), and #91 (Lizzo) like I was being paid to do so.

Thanks for the list though because I need to add some new stuff to my playlists and this sounds like a great starting place.

Yes, I love the year-end lists, not because I necessarily agree with the rankings or the arguments about which act deserves which spot in them, but it's a chance to give a listen to albums I may have missed and for me there isn't a huge opportunity cost in listening to an album I don't end up liking.

This has been a weird music year for me--the return of the commute has meant that I'm listening to full albums with headphones again, but I'm getting to that age where I'm just as likely to pick out a hard bop album from 1960 as I am something new. Also, while I can't objectively prove it, the absolute worst time to listen to Renaissance is at 6:30 in the morning at the start of a 90 minute ride to work.

Also I've gotten really serious about learning Spanish this year, so Spanish pop has been high on the list for me and introduced me to entire new genres. Loved Rosalia and Bad Bunny's albums; Julieta Venegas' new one is fantastic as well (much of which dribbled out as singles throughout the year). And while he may bemoan the algorithm, I'm deeply thankful to Spotify for introducing me to Jorge Drexler as well.

Alvvays' Blue Rev sounds to me like it came out in 2001 and they're opening for YLT tonight. I still haven't decided whether I love that or hate it yet. This is a Photograph has been in heavy rotation all year. Can't believe I've slept on the Big Thief album, and can't believe I found out about a Danger Mouse / Black Thought collab fifteen minutes ago.
