The story of how an unaired TV pilot from David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada, Band of Brothers, etc.) starring Bebe Neuwirth won an Oscar. (Grainy YouTube video of the pilot included in the link.)

Well, TIL Bebe Neuwirth comes from math and grace. Which in retrospect comes as no surprise: Qui n'aime pas le bébé?

Quick: Can you name the first DreamWorks film to win an Academy Award?

What? No, of course I couldn't, not before reading this piece. Is this something people can do?

the photo caption reverses the names: Bebe is the brunette, on the right.

it's a fun little film, really well written

Sigh, what we might have had in the non-darkest timeline.

That was really sweet! I can't imagine it as a TV show - too much narration, not enough actual characters or real scenes (though SATC found a balance, so I suppose it could too). And I found the actual narration pretty grating. But it was a joy to see young Mike Starr, and Neuwirth was adorable. Great find!

I enjoyed this and glad it won an Oscar. I definitely see the Sex and the City vibes coming out of it and see how it influenced the show. With honesty though, I think Bebe Neuwirth is actually too talented for something like this. She was a bit of a character being propelled through space in this short movie - she's so talented, she deserves meatier roles.

Not as many people as can name who won Super Bowl XXIII or which NBA player has the third most assists or something, but, yes, there’s a certain kind of movie geek who absolutely knows this kind of thing.

So does this mean Bebe Neuwirth is a Grammy away from being an EGOT?

(Seriously, I know the Oscar wasn't hers, per se, but still...)
