passionate bacon enthusiasm in the US & Canada

I think I felt my arteries harden a bit just from reading the word "bacon" so many times.

Also, now I want some bacon.

This reminds me that I haven't had bacon for quite a while. I believe that dinner will be BLTs.

From the Wikipedia page: The movement has been traced to the late 1990s when high-protein foods became a more prominent diet focus due in part to the Atkins diet. Since then, bacon-focused events and gatherings celebrating the food have been reported and bacon-related exploits have been featured in media accounts.

I... just... bacon-related exploits? Cool. Cool cool. Normal time to be alive.

Wasn't the big thing that most fast food in the 80s and 90s was really bland and bacon was the only thing that could give it some sort of taste. So it got put as an option to make most things taste better, especially when pork prices were really low.

As such it got shoehorned into the idea it made everything better.

You say "shoehorned" as if it wasn't true...

I just finished my last pound of farmers market bacon that's made by an incredible local butcher/BBQ enthusiast. The bacon was bourbon fennel and it makes an incredible BLT, but yesterday, I ate the whole package plain.

Eponysterical, but also, I think we have about eleven MeFites whose usernames refer to bacon (and whose wallet surnames are not "Bacon"). (In contrast we have 30+ users who have some form of "potato" in their usernames.)

I coincidentally just came in from a grocery run, and bacon was one of the things on the list - but I had no idea this was The Day for it.

(I just try to keep some on hand for pasta carbonara, and I'm using some to make collard greens on Sunday.)

I like bacon enough that I make my own (highly recommended if you have the wherewithal) but there was a time when people were just too much about bacon.

I prefer to use it more as a seasoning element in a dish than as a major component.

Fark dot com (which I haven't looked at in years) is/was a site where members post links to news stories and the membership discusses them (stupid idea for website but oh well). A post on same-sex marriage legalization in [California?] said something like "instead of discussing this, post pictures of foods wrapped it bacon". It was glorious.

Also 8 users with “eggs” in their name, so we could host a breakfast….

Today is also National Bicarbonate of Soda Day but baking soda fans are less demonstrative than bacon fans.

Just to note, having multiple bacon days is quite okay.

I was going to start selling my bacon in 2022, except pork belly prices nearly doubled and the shipping is really expensive. I suppose there is a market for fancy dancy expensive food stuff-- where is that Williams Sonoma link?-- but I just don't have the energy to convince folks they need to spend $$$, even though it's very good bacon. Perhaps we can have IRL again someday, and I'll bring bacon. Wishing us all a good year ahead, with bacon as needed.

There are a lot more people in this world who eat potatoes than who eat pigs. Pigs being more likely to be considered an unethical food choice. That's probably part of why.

I think it's because potatoes are inherently funnier than bacon.
