It looks like it will be beautiful.

Wow that's going to be good.

Is the worm-riding a spoiler (for those not already familiar with the story, of course)? I'm actually curious because I don't remember any clear reference to it in part 1, but now this trailer is just showing it.

I think that Dune is old enough, and oft-adapted enough, that spoilers aren't really a useful concept. The audience for the second half of Dune is very largely people who like Dune.

I mean, spoiler I guess if you've not read the books. There may have been some lines about riding a worm in the first film but here it is.

We really only barely met the Fremen and didn't get much of their culture at all in Part 1.

For what it's worth, about ten years ago I got a T-shirt from ThinkGeek with the slogan "I'm on a worm" and a picture of a worm rider, so I'd guess it's a known thing?

Straight-up show it about 40 seconds before credits roll.

I mean, I was wondering because I am going to see this with two people who are entirely unfamiliar with Dune. I don't mean "spoiler" in the sense of this being some horrible thing to show; I just had the impression that they were saving up a big reveal.

In Part 1, Liet-Kynes got out maker hooks and a thumper, and was preparing to ride a worm, before she was attacked.

Pacing-wise, I believe (it's been a while since I read it) that the worm-riding should be one of the very first plot beats in this second half, so even if it weren't so clearly set up (thanks, Ryvar!) it wouldn't be a major spoiler.

Man I am so on board with this. I love the book and respect the gonzo-ness of the first movie adaptation but this version is way more my speed and I can't wait to see what Villeneuve has done with it.

Well, there's my November 3rd sorted.

Needs to focus more on the real question of Arrakis plumbing.

It was definitely in the Lynch version, punctuated by a sweet Steve Lukather guitar riff.

Isn't it one of the better-known tropes of the Dune thing? My one-sentence review of the Lynch Dune was "Probably the only film you'll ever see with a bunch of dudes in rubber suits riding a giant schlong across the desert".

Actually, it looks like I was wrong about that...

The big reveal, as far as I'm concerned in the story, is only barely hinted at in this trailer.

Seconded. Always wanted Dune to get the LOTR treatment and the first film was, like, 95% of the way there? Even just maintain that and it’s a new classic.

I just wish they could expand the first book’s appendices on religion and ecology into an entirely new film - or a short? - and resist the temptation to adapt the rest of the series. Regarding which, a PSA: the arc of the series is a pretty sharp decline in quality with each subsequent novel though hardcore fans will swear Chapterhouse is an exception. I tapped out at God Emperor, the fourth book. I’m sure someone will be along shortly to protest this, to which I say “remove yourself.”

I am the weirdo who prefers Children of Dune, but arcane and overelaborate politics is 100% My Thing.

At some point, we need to have a 20-story tall worm-Jesus on screen. Lots of source material to mine and an entire career for Jason Momoa.

So, those wanting to deep dive into Dune and (other SF) might enjoy the YouTube channel Quinn's Ideas. He not only does synopses of the books but also takes big ideas that sweep across the entire series and will devote a video to explaining those. I've enjoyed his stuff quite a bit.

i dropped the series after children (well, i think i might have read like 10 pages of the next one and noped out). but it was my understanding that the second book could have been part of the first book, but that it was split off by the publisher.

i may be a hallucinating llm, though, so i'm not certain the above statement corresponds to any external consensus intersubjective reality.

I mean I haven't gotten through any version of Dune yet (including the last Part 1).

I found V's first Dune movie to be pretty good. I appreciated the extra time he took, splitting the thing into two. Some fine casting. Lots of nice visual storytelling. Clearly trying to be faithful to the book, but willing to do a little gentle play along the way.

I would still like to see Jodorowsky's.
