Flooding in Vermont

Vermont is flooding. Historic and catastrophic flooding is happening in Vermont, with many fearful that it is not over yet. Heavy rainfall beginning July 10 caused rivers to swell and overflow, with President Biden declaring Vermont in a state of emergency until further notice. Metafilter's own yes I said yes I will Yes made a TikTok that went viral, and was asked to give Fox Weather a somewhat terror-filled live interview as the West River in Londonderry creeped to her front door. The River has since subsided but wreckage is severe.

There are water rescues across the state and flooding is everywhere.

Please think of all your northeast neighbors and stay safe.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Sorry that you and others are going through this, but posting your own Tiktoks and a news interview goes a bit too close to the self linking category. -- Brandon Blatcher

Pretty scary indeed! I’m glad you’re doing okay.

Very scary.

And fuck Fox Weather for prepending the interview clip with a highly inappropriate Walmart advertisement featuring a rendition of "Wipe Out". (did anyone else get that when they clicked on the link?)

Glad you are safe, and thanks for posting. FYI, I posted in MetaTalk for folks to check in with the community on how they are doing in Vermont and elsewhere in terms of scary flooding, etc.

It reminds me of Hurricane Irene.

Our town had seen our river flood a few years before, so we went into debt to armor the riverbanks against a "century flood." Irene was two years later.

So many stories... my then-teenage kids stomping around town, helping people.

One bridge washed out, perfectly stranding folks on the other side.

A friend in Europe tweeting out that things must be fine in Vermont, because he hadn't heard anything. He hadn't heard anything because our infrastructure was out.

Speaking of which, Vermont's shitty cell phone coverage appeared on NPR. The reporter asked the state's governor why more people weren't using cell phones to get information, coordinate, etc. The gov sighed heavily and offered some euphemistic description of just how few people had cell access.

Many Vermonters told me they felt abandoned by the feds, and saw themselves having to take care of their own.

I just watched the TikTok from yes I said yes I will Yes and just about shat my pants. What is it like outside your home now, or did you eventually leave? So horrifying!

We don't live in Vermont now, but have been in touch with friends there. Most are holed up with supplies. None have evacuated yet.
