Looks like I'll have to plan a recipe for that day. UncleFes got me started on homebrewing during the course of this thread about beer, a little more than a year ago. Homebrewing has definitely become one of my most enjoyable hobbies. posted by starvingartist at 1:00 PM on October 22, 2002

I've been a mead-brewer for the past 5 years. It's been a very rewarding experience, and makes me a hit at parties.
For those not in the know, mead is honey and water, fermented. It's usually around 15% alcohol, and quite tasty, especially when flavored with fresh fruits.
I've done beer too, so if any of y'all want pointers or suggestions, feel free to email. posted by rocketman at 1:39 PM on October 22, 2002

Cade. ... and I will make it felony to drink small beer. All the realm shall be in common, and in Cheapside shall my palfrey go to grass. And when I am king,—as king I will be.

Sweet! The link to the "Good Eats" ep where AB does beer. I still haven't seen that one. Was it any good? posted by fijiwriter at 2:30 PM on October 22, 2002
ABC is the easiest and best mead recipe I've ever seen. Guaranteed to be consumed before it reaches it's prime. posted by goethean at 2:41 PM on October 22, 2002

I've been brewing for about a year and a half. I recommend it very highly.
Even if you're not particularly interested in brewing, or if you don't currently have the time/space/money to get into it, keep in mind that a brew club is, basically, a bunch of guys who want to give you free beer. It may be worth your while to check out a meeting. posted by electro at 4:29 PM on October 22, 2002
Mmmm, homemade beer... Brings back childhood memories. My parents made homebrew when we lived in a small fishing village in Alaska. We lived for months in the town's only hotel while our house was being built and, as I remember, the sound of the occasional exploding beer bottle at odd hours tended to alarm and puzzle the other guests.
