Good thing this wasn't posted in an inflammatory way, otherwise it might have turned ugly.

What on earth does this have to do with RU-486?

One more time: RU-486 and hormonal emergency contraceptives are *NOT THE SAME THING*

Fair and balanced, just the way I like it.

antimony - you beat me to it. And it's not just a matter of pedantry... anti-abortion types are deliberately trying to confuse the two.

Speaking of Iran, here's a webcam for Tehran. Looks like it's about 63 degrees currently.

And here I was afraid Metafilter would turn into just another left wing anti-bush bashfest till November.

I should have had more faith.

What does it spell? I think you know.

Well, at least the first linked article was good for a laugh: the Concerned Women of America spokesperson claims to be worried that emergency contraception will be "slipped to women without their knowledge"! Hee hee.

Oh, and the American College of Obestetricians and Gynecologists of relies on "junk science." Yeah, doctors are notorious for that... much more so than anti-abortion activists. It is worth noting, however, that if you rearrange the letters in ACOG's name, you can spell "Laconic, goofy medics stare at obscene genitals on girl." Perhaps CWA is onto something after all...

The Impact of Legalized Abortion on Crime.

Culling the herd.

RU-486 is not the same as Plan B.

RU-486 (95.5% in the first 7 weeks) is far more effective than Plan B (manufacturer claims of 89% in the first three days, health clinics claim of approximately 70%, but do vary). RU-486, if effective, causes the woman to stop being pregnant in the first 9 weeks, though the effectiveness drops in the last two weeks. Plan B will prevent a woman from becoming pregnant in the first three days since the incident, but has a significantly higher chance of working closer to the incident.

RU-486 is nearly as costly and as surgical procedures, but this varies greatly. Plan B can be received for free or next to no cost from many family planning agencies. The side effects of RU-486 are like a surgical abortion and runs the risk of a partial abortion and personal injury. Plan B is much more like menstrual cramps, though you will find doctors asking about your mental health (namely depression) before it is given to you. It is known to increase your odds of becoming depressed for a period of time if you have a tendency to be depressed.

Sequential:

Good call on the differences, statistics-wise, but the diference is bigger than that, even...

Plan-B is a contraceptive. It *prevents* pregnancy if taken before conception occurs, but it does not end a pregnancy that has already happened.

RU-486 is an abortifacient. It ends a pregnancy after conception has already occured.

The two often get lumped together, though I don't see why people who are against abortion would be against access to a contraceptive that could substantially reduce the need for abortion in the first place.
