Hurricane Olive Oyl

Hurricane victims to receive federal aid, after local strategic oil reserves secured — "Beginning last week, we have been in close contact with our federal partners, site managers at various locations of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve [in Texas and Louisiana], and companies that operate oil refineries to prepare for any disruption in oil production." Meanwhile, the Bush administration uses official and semi-official mechanisms to help topple a sovereign, independent nation, and one that coincidentally provides the U.S. with nearly as much crude oil as Saudi Arabia, yet had the audacity to ask U.S. petrochemical companies for a larger share of royalties.

Um, where in that article does it say anything about the order in which this aid is going to be disbursed? Sounds like aid is already coming, and the disbursement of the Strategic Oil Reserve has been talked about but not authorized.

How does the hurricane impact on oil supplies have anything to do with Venezuela?

[this post sucks]

Reeks of socialism. Just more evidence that Bush is just way too far to the left.

I don't want to get into the Venezuela bit--please explain yourself better, thanks--but . . .

When the storm passes, the federal government has got assets and resources that we'll be deploying to help you.

And who'll pay this all off? How are we going to pay for all this and faith-based initiatives, Iraq and the giant prescription drug benefits plan and No Child Left Behind, and marriage protection programs, etc. simultaneously?

How does the hurricane impact on oil supplies have anything to do with Venezuela

Venezuela's oil exports to the US have been declining steadily over the last five years. This country is a major provider for US energy consumption needs. Over-reliance on and improper use of strategic reserves impacts our country in a number of ways, including our ability to respond to genuine energy shortage emergencies.

And is he willing to give a thumb's up to funds for wetlands renewal to help prevent a future disaster? Will he be seriously committed to stopping the rise of the Gulf of Mexico's waters? How about more extensive evacuation planning for major cities by Homeland Security?

There was no need to bring up Venezuela, or at least Venezuela at the expense of so many other relevant issues. It's a marginal issue by comparison with those listed above. It's a lame post.

with nearly as much crude oil as Saudi Arabia,

The site listed there says US oil imports for June (in thousand of barrels) is
SAUDI ARABIA 1,598
VENEZUELA 1,292

That's almost 25% more, right?

Is that nearly as much?

After re-reading this post, almost every single thing in this post is wrong. You editorialized and distorted everything in order to grind your axe. What a crappy post.

In the meantime, America will pray -- pray for the health and safety of all our citizens," Bush said in remarks directed at storm victims.

Instead of praying Mr. Bush, we expect you to be working. Prayer is for losers. Prayer is for people who expect someone else to solve their problems for them. America is the richest country in the world. America can invade and occupy a country the size of California and not miss a beat. America does not need God's help. Get off your knees and get back to work.

wow, crap post.

Although, as long as we're bush bashing, let me point out: We'd have a lot more national guardsmen down there right now if they wern't all tied up in Iraq...

Rothko, you really blew it in this post... you forgot to blame Bush for causing Katrina in the first place.

I've heard of 'out in left field' before, but this is the first time I've ever thought that it needed a capital L.

(disclaimer: I dislike BushCo intensely. But there's real stuff to bash them about, not this imaginary crap.)
