A Burrito is not a Sandwich, because some people need a judge to explain that to them.

It's not a casserole or a soup either. But what IS it?
What would you call such an item? I would assume pizza could also be called the same, as it involves one "bread" item with toppings/stuffings. Or maybe perogies too.
What are these bastard foods?

1) I think Panera is stupid to not see multiple lunch options in one location as a business draw instead of a competitive problem. But since they do see it that way, they had a pretty reasonable expectation that the landlord wouldn't lease to a quick food service business. 2) The judgement is technically correct, which is what makes it funny, and Panera will probably insist on "no quick food shops" instead of "no sandwich shops" in their future (stupidly shortsighted) lease restrictions. 3) Linking to nothing but a very short news story like this is a pretty lame excuse for a front page post. Put some effort into your posts please.

I don't think the judgment is technically correct- what about burgers?

Panera would have been better off arguing about what a "sandwich shop" is rather than just a sandwich. It's a no-brainer that a burrito is not a sandwich. A sandwich shop could at least be argued to be a colloquial term for a grab-and-go food restaurant. Still probably a loser, but slightly less laughable.

I wonder if the people in this thread asking for a sandwich burrito know that, not only does such a thing exist, its arguably one of the most popular foods in Mexico.

Oh, I've had some wonderful tortas, and would disagree with your characterization of them, vacapinta, but only to pick nits. A torta is more like a burrito sandwich (the contents of a burrito in sandwich form) than a sandwich burrito (the contents of a sandwich in a burrito). Though I guess wraps are kind of close on that score.
