i'm moving to georgia with my fiance in may. he's from augusta and wants to move there but i think i would like to be closer to atlanta. i don't want to live in the city. i want to live in a fun town with culture and be able to have about an acre of property. (and low crime rates) any ideas?

Yeah, I know it was jayder, I guess it was more of a "what the hell is wrong with jayder?" question.

You'll never survive in Georgia without capital letters.

papakwanz - "favorite" is, in this case, just jayder's way of remembering a funny thread. And that's what this is; see, it's funny because someone heard about metafilter, signed up & posted without ever bothering to find out about that place.

I suggest Seattle.

The commute kind of sucks (I'd suggest first going south and then cutting east on the 10 rather than just immediately going east on I-90 and cutting south later) but it is better than Georgia in almost every way.

I'm sorry. We're going to need a YouTube or Wikipedia link in order to help you.

But seriously, why not Athens? That's the only reason to live in GA, I've been told.
posted by bardic at 9:49 AM on December 30, 2006

Yeah, send this to the green, but you're not going to find "a fun town with culture" outside of Atlanta. Sure you can own an acre in Cumming or Lawrenceville, be near, but outside the city, but if you call that culture............

Seattle is not the place to go if you don't like year-round rain, Athens is crawling with college kids and you'll feel like an old fart if you're over 30, and Augusta will bore you to tears if you're specifically looking for fun with culture. However, James Brown's home could well be for sale soon at nearby Beech Island. I'd wait, and after purchase at least keep that as a vacation home if you can afford the upkeep.
