The Christianist Manifesto: A Partial Fisking

Watergate thug Chuck Colson has issued a call to Christianist jihad called the Manhattan Declaration. Fortunately, tristero has fisked it so that you and I don't have to.

This post was deleted for the following reason: That being on someone's blog seems just about right as far as the natural order of the univers goes. It being a front page post on Metafilter, not so much. -- cortex

This is a shit post. Flame-y, single link political blog spam, overt editorializing...you aren't new here, what gives?

We call on all officials in our country, elected and appointed, to protect and serve every member of our society, including the most marginalized, voiceless, and vulnerable among us.

The marginalized, voiceless, and vulnerable all mean one thing, the unborn fetus. There are a whole hell of a lot of other members in society, but I guess they just don't count as much.

I won't read that link. But given his no doubt dogmatic and strident views about who is and is not a true-american wouldn't the marginalized, voiceless, and vulnerable turn out to be every one who isn't a White, Christian Male in a fairly high tax bracket?

This isn't a good post and the editorializing makes it even worse.

Because the sanctity of human life, the dignity of marriage as a union of husband and wife, and the freedom of conscience and religion are foundational principles of justice and the common good, we are compelled by our Christian faith to speak and act in their defense. In this declaration we affirm: 1) the profound, inherent, and equal dignity of every human being as a creature fashioned in the very image of God, possessing inherent rights of equal dignity and life; 2) marriage as a conjugal union of man and woman, ordained by God from the creation, and historically understood by believers and non-believers alike, to be the most basic institution in society and; 3) religious liberty, which is grounded in the character of God, the example of Christ, and the inherent freedom and dignity of human beings created in the divine image.

#1 could be more palatable with the deletion of a few words: the profound, inherent, and equal dignity of every human being possessing inherent rights of equal dignity and life

#2 could make everyone happy if they changed it to: marriage as a conjugal union of man and woman, ordained by God from the creation and as such, a concern for the church and not the state. We'll cojoin in church whichever couple we feel God deems fit and the state can cojoin whomever they want--but not in our church.

#3 is the easiest: religious liberty, which is grounded in the character of God, the example of Christ, and the inherent freedom and dignity of human beings created in the divine image.

They just had a little problem with wordiness there.
