Small point of order: "what you gonna do" is more a cautionary and hypothetical question - it would seem that the song is warning you to be careful not to run out of gancha. "What do you do" is more a simple question perhaps seeking advice or simply starting a conversation.

It's funny because they suck. Long hair guitar boy is cute at least.

In vaguely related news, we're supposed to hate Vampire Weekend because they play some ska. Too bad the new album is awesome.

The guitarist had a Misfits sticker on his guitar, and the bassist was wearing a PiL T-shirt, and this is what they decided to perform? This is an insult to public access television stars all over the world.

Mad props Winnipeg! Keepin' it real in '92, my homies!

Actually, by '92 I had already left for good. But community access TV before two decades of intense media consolidation in Canada introduce me to some weird shit.

Oh, and the Youtube commenter who suggests that Winnipeg is somehow a musical wasteland based on this link, I have two suggestions:

1. Dude. You are commenting. On Youtube. You've already lost.
2. Your music sucks.

Hey snarkers! At least they're standing there, trying, doing something. With the new media avalanche that's buried us since this was filmed, it's become so easy to just consume and consume and consume and never lift your finger to produce anything. Props to anyone who takes a creative risk, even if it's just a bunch of sixteen-year-old kids new to the idea of being cultural players rather than passive audience members.

Wow. Johnny Sizzle had a music show in Winnipeg? I put on a few shows for that guy in Kingston, ON in the late 90's. He's a fucking legend. He played "acoustic hardcore" and had such notable songs as "Drugs are school, School is drugs", "Ron Jeremy for President" and "Hitler's Hair Really Sucked". He really put on a great show! The first show I put on for him, he nearly got into a fight at a strip club across from the venue because he walked in to use the payphone while wearing a shirt that had statements against domestic violence on it. The band that he opened up for had a guitarist from Winnipeg, and the guy was like "holy shit, that's Johnny Sizzle - when I was a kid in Winnipeg I made silk-screened Johnny Sizzle underwear for him". Johnny had insane stories, and still plays around I think.

So, a "C" for an ill-conceived effort, then.

What grade would you give them for execution? They're off key and the whole video is like nails on a chalkboard.

If they had auditioned on American Idol last season, Paula Abdul would have told them they looked great and were dressed just like real rock stars, right before Simon Cowell tossed them in the wood chipper.

Aaron Funk (Venetian Snares) says "Winnipeg is a frozen shithole." So, it IS a wasteland, but as evidenced by the fact that Venetian Snares is ALSO from Winnipeg, it is certainly NOT a musical wasteland. (c.f. this comment with other bands)

Nelson, I think Vampire Weekend is awesome until you put them on when you're having a monumentally crappy day. Then they make me want to fly to whatever French colonial villa their parents have time share at and mess up their pretty little trust fund faces. This dichotomy is part of their appeal.

In related, I think the question that this band posits is a timeless one and one that we can all relate to.

1992 was a little earlier than another Winnipeg crew was getting together as Break Bread (actually Brandon MB, an even bigger shithole). They've gone a bit further than Mental Note...

Fermented Reptile - Thin Line - My Savings Account - Simple Me
featuring
Mcenroe - Cereal for Dinner - The Realist pt.1 - pt.2, Pip Skid & John Smith & Gruf

Now this is Winnipeg white boy hip hop at its finest.

Is the enjoyment of this video related to previous experience trying to play music in a band as a kid? I was barely involved in it, maybe a couple dozen scattered cacophonous get-togethers over the course of a year or two, during which I made no effort to improve my guitar skills or even learn a single thing about the instrument or music theory generally, and I love this video very deeply, both prior to and after electing myself to high office.
