Civil War Ball

Regents is a private, religious school in Oxford, MS. They recently held a 6th grade Civil War ball. Photos, including this one, were featured in the local magazine "Invitation Oxford."

meh. I usually reserve my outrage for people who are at least old enough to drive.
Also, the more people doing historical reenactments in goofy costumes, the better says I (granted, the civil war stuff could use some more, um, context)

It would have been more interesting if it were a black boy dancing with a white girl -- but this is still suggestive of some kind of progress over the past fifty years.

I don't get it. Maybe it would have been edgier if the girl had gotten a glue-on 'stache and gone as Bobby Lee, but then the boy ... well, probably best he didn't; the blackface discussion gets old. But sixth-graders are not generally known for being edgy or nonconformist. At least it looks like they're having a good time; that's better than any dance I went to in middle school.

Interracial dancing? That's an improvement. 10 years ago, I saw a production of Oklahoma at a public school 20 miles away from Oxford, and it was choreographed to make sure there was no interracial dancing.

I always wonder where folks get these period costumes. Do they buy them somewhere, or make them themselves, or modify a modern dress or suit to match the older style? I bet she had a lot of fun dressing up in that beautiful gown, and enjoys seeing the photos of herself wearing her dress and dancing with her friends.
